Hi Guys

I have been reading and posting on this Forum for a while and have now finally got my self a proper Heli!!

For the last 18months on and off I have been using my Reflex simulator and have learn't some of the basics of hovering etc. I can hover pretty confidently although my nose in isn't very good at the moment. I can also loop and roll and do stall turns. (not very tidy I might add but getting better all the time)

In the last few months i have been flying a Lama V3 and have enjoyed it and used it to learn to improve my nose in hovering, but i am fast getting bored of its basic flying abilities.

However.

Just recently I have been very fortunate to be given a fully operational Zoom/ Shogun 400 with many upgrades including the Belt driven tail.

I know the 400 size Heli's are not the best thing to learn with but beggers cant be choosers and i am very greatful. I have bought a DX7 and AR6200 but not yet installed or set up.

The Heli has a brushless motor carbon blades GY401 and 1800 Flight Powers.

OK

What i would like to know is how to tame the little fella!

Currently it is set up for a head speed close to 3000RPM and I sh*t
myself on spool up!. (Using previous owners TX)

What i would like to know is what is the best way to bring the head speed down to a sensible level for learning and what sort of Pitch and Throttle curves should i be using for a newbie in my new DX7.

I am just about to fit a set of training gear to help prevent tip overs

Any advice to get me in the air sensibly would be most appreciated.

Sorry for the long post

Many Thanks for your time

Ben

What motor are you running?

What Pinion?

Are you using the stock paddles?

A standard pitch curve should be fine -10, -5, 0, 5, 10
I'm using a throttle curve of 0, 60, 90, 90, 90
and 100, 90, 90, 90, 100

Do you have a HH gyro on board?

Dual Rates can be your friend with taking off and landing as a learner.

Congratulations on the "proper" heli. when setup well, the guns are great fun.

Not 100% sure what Brushless motor I'm using but it's an in runner blue in colour small in diameter maybe 20mm, with built in cooling fins.

I'm running a 10tooth pinion

and current head speed is supposed to be close to 3000RPM.

Having spoken to other pilots and they have recommended to keep the head speed high as it helps with stability.

I just need to play with end points and pitch curves.

I'm also using FP 3cell 1800 20c flight packs

and I'm just in the process of setting up a DX7 and AR6200.

I am also running a GY401

Looking forward to getting her airborne!!

Thanks for any help

To bring the headspeed down, switch back to the foamy blades or some light semi-symetrical wood blades. I have a set of carbon for my Shogun V2 and hate them. They are heavy, don't supply as much lift which makes the head speed go way up. The foamies will not wreck as many things as the carbon will, if you hit yourself with those carbon blades you'll be really hurt. Beside the carbon draw more power from the battery, so switching to a lighter blade will let you fly longer per battery, and might also save the tail boom when you have a strike.

Many thanks for the advice

I have some of the original Foamy blades that i will fit for my maiden flights if only for the reason that its cheaper to replace them than carbons!!

Good point about the safety as well!!

What are these blades like for balancing? I haven't checked mine yet

I also have access to some align 315 pro woodies that i am told are balanced very well from the factory and are cheap to replace.

What is your opinion?

Many thanks

Ben

sounds like you have one of the later hackers with the built in fins...

I fly my shogun at 2500 headspeed. works fine. I'm no 3d flyer, just buzz it around.

my hacker will run the headspeed far higher than I'm comfortable with on only a 9 tooth pinion, so I just dialed the throttle curve down on the top end. I'd have to look, but think it's at 70 percent max. that's worked just fine for two seasons and hundreds of flights. motor gets warm, but never hot.

Hi Astro Flyer

With your throttle curve maximum set so low, at what temperature does the ESC run at?

I have been told that its not very efficient to run the esc much below 100 due to the heat it generates.

Will probably get myself a couple of pinions to see what i like best.
What size is the motor output shaft on your motor?

Are 8 tooth pinions available in this size?

Many thanks for your advice

That's what everyone says, but in my case neither the motor or ESC are overly hot. the battery is barely warm to the touch. the ESC is just a 20 amp eflite.

with heli's in idle up, you could run an ESC at 100 percent the whole flight, but remember there are countless ESC's out there in airplanes that never see that setting other than perhaps take off. Continuous partial throttle usage has never hurt any motor or ESC in any of my planes...and I've been into e-flying for many years.,,

I fly the shogun two 6 minute flights on each 2100 mah lipo with down time between flights so that might be part of the reason I see lttle heat. although I've never done it, there is probably another 6 minute fight left in each pack.

the shogun pinions are not common as they have to be tall enough to cover two gears. 9 tooth is the smallest I've seen.

my motor is a hacker B20_15L shaft size 2.3mm.

I missed the motor part, sounds like the optional EF brushless motor that came with these kits. Not horible, but not stellar, I have one on my V2. With the foamy blades I can stay under 18 amps hovering, I'm skilled enough to even try any 3D. The carbon blades that I have put me well over 18 amps to where mt cheapo 18 amp ESC shuts down. The carbons were on it when I bought it (used) so there might be nice carbon blades out there.

And buy some Gorilla Gear! You'll need to drill new screw holes. but they are worth the money. Gorilla tail rotors do not fit, and I haven't tried the paddles, but I doubt they will fit.

I think those align blades will be too long at 315mm, I think we need 285mm, but might be wrong.

on a side note... If I ever finish stripping it down I'll have a bunch of V1 frame parts to sell, including the belt drive conversion and I think a total of 3 belts. I need to finish robbing parts off of it for my V2. I think all I have left is to pull the head assembly and motor.

Hey Astroflyer you still there?

i was wondering do you know the number of poles the blue EF brushless motor has?

i would like to know for my Brushless RPM sensor i have just received for my Eagle Tree Logger
