RJX Hobby Hurrican 50 - Xtreme 50 > Tail taking up the hot new sport of drifting! - SOLVED!!!

I have a 401 with a 9253 servo. The 401 gain is set to 75.

I have the governor set to 1800 in Normal, 1900 in idle 1, and 1950 in idle 2.

In Normal, the tail drifts to the left (nose to the right). If I let it, it would slowly drift all the way around. I tried hovering with the wind (slight wind) to my right, and with the wind to my left. It didn't matter - the heli would turn to the right.

When I selected idle 1 or 2, the drifting would stop!

What's up with that??????

Do you have some trim on the rudder channel in normal mode that you dont have in the other two??? Maybe even heading hold being turned off in normal while on in the others. Check those data points in your radio first thing. Hopefully its something simple like that.

Good thought, but no. No trim, and I verified it was in heading hold.

RCHeliJim,

I thought about what you said some more, so I went out and checked my TX.

As far as my Futaba 9CHP is concerned, I can only add trim to rudder in one place. If I add trim, it would be in Normal mode, Idle 1 and Idle 2.

Is there another trim you are talking about, or is your TX very different?

By the way, it was set to "0".

Rock,

You should be able to take the gyro out of HH via a switch, I usually set all my gyro's 401's, 6100, 611's in normal or non HH mode and get them set mechanically to hover in the initial setup, then always fly in HH mode and have never had the tail drift.

I'll try that. But why would it drift in normal mode and not idle up???

OK, no one came up with the same theory that I had. So I put it to the test today.

My theory was simply that the tail did not have enough authority at 1800 rpm as it did at 1900 rpm. So today, I set normal mode to 1900 rpm on the governor. Sure enough, it was locked-in in normal mode now. I switched back and forth between normal and idle 1 with no difference whatsoever!

So that solved the problem!! -- Well, sort of!

It used to be fine at the lower head speed, so why would the tail start losing authority? And I have even lower headspeeds on other helis and they hold with a 401.

So what has happened? I haven't changed the tail blades, and I haven't changed anything for that matter.

What do you guys think?

Have you tried a different tail servo? I know when my tail servos start getting worn out they dont hold as well. Might be the case here???

At this point that was what I was thinking. It's an old 9253 servo. Could be tired!

I replaced the old, tired 9253 tail servo with a new Hitec 6965 servo, and the tail authority is now rock solid!

I ran the headspeed all the way down to 1700, and she held like a vice!

I am really happy with the 6965 - much more so than Futaba's 9254 on my other heli.
