Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > Tail rotor upgrade

I've read lots of stuff on going to a one piece tail rotor hub and it sounds like its a 50/50 toss up. I have never had a tail strike and there apears to be no play in the hub, all screws and parts checked after every day of flying. I've just transitioned into forward flight and don't plan on alot of 3d for quite a while. I've heared that the jr hub is a good one but people talk about putting 2mm washers on it but they never say where. Should I go ahead and get the new hub or am i ok for now ?

Thanks
Shamoo

Shamoo,
Like the "Nike" commercial says, "Just Do It!" Don't scrimp on something as important as your Tail Rotor!!! If you end up crashing your Raptor because one or both of your T/R blades come off, you'll think the 9.99 would have been pretty cheap!!! see ya............

You guys must not have flown your Raptors long enough to realize that the stock tail rotor is just fine. Loctite it and keep an eye on it every now and then. I had my tail rotor get a little loose 2 out of the first 3 flights. I recognized it in flight because my tail would start to jump around a little bit. After that I've never had a problem with it gallon after gallon after gallon. If you assemble it right, you won't have to assemble it again. Oh yea, I owned a Ergo for more about two years, I can't even count how many hubs I had to replace because it bent easily and the tail blades ran out of track.

Rappy Tappy, I am going with Fury Flyer. I am guessing it not so much your building ability as good luck.

In 3+ years of flying Raptors I have had only 1 tailrotor hub failure, the grub screw sheared off. I do have a KSJ one-pc Ergo hub on one of them (the one that tossed the grip last year). I have replaced the 1-pc unit twice from crashes but I have also replaced the stock units after crashes.
Assemble the stock unit properly and you should be OK. I don't think the 1-pc would fail in flight like the stock unit could. Keep in mind that there were probably over 1000 flights on this hub when it did fail.

I will post a pic of the 1-pc hub upgrade with a parts list (as soon as my server is back up) for those interested.

Rotor, there certainly are a lot of lucky Raptor owners then.

Ok, How could the grub screws bend? The inner races of the bearing are locked by the hub and the bolt. I'm curious as to where it would bend, you'd have to knock that sucker against something pretty hard( I know I have and it did nothing). I remember talking to a guy that was dead set that the stock tail rotor would fail instantly, we talked for an hour about it and he kept trying to argue it. The guy hadn't even had his first hover on it yet, sheesh. lots of locktite on the screws, torque them down. Then put the bearings on the grub screws with locktite and torque down on the bearings with the nut without compromising smoothness. Put the two tail blade holders together and you have a great tail. After a hundred flights replace the grub screws if you want to, they are cheap.

Rappy Tappy, to be honest I changed mine out right away when I looked at the one piece hub and at the stock part. To me it just looked better built with more strength. I have only seen the ones that have been problems when they shook very badly or when the blades have come off. I really have not looked at the ones that have been on a Raptor for a long time. You are probably correct. I would guess the problem happens when the tail rotor is dinged on the ground. If they are installed correctly and not dorked I imagine they would be just fine. I was just kiddin' with you. Sorry if you thought I was getting on your case, I didn't mean it that way. Catch you later....

Rotor, I didn't think you were getting on my case. I was enjoying the debate, it usually leads to very good answers and insights. Its all gravy, as they say

Best one piece hub

So out of all of the one piece hubs out there which one is the best for the Raptor? I don't want to have to use washers to shim the fit if there is a hub out there that does not require it.
