Main Discussion > What are your thoughts PRO’s vs CON’s (flying style)

I have been flying Heli’s now for about 6 months and I have noticed that some of you guys like to fly with just your thumbs and some with the index finger and thumb.

I currently fly with just my thumbs and I’m feeling like I don’t have a good awareness of stick position and that maybe using the thumb with index finger would help this…

I would like to hear what you like and why you think it’s the better style.

Thank you

Pure matter of preference. Try it both ways and see what feels best to you. I tried thumbs only and didn't like it. I feel I get the best control using the thumb & finger method.

My preference is the same style as shown in this video

Also, I tighten down the tension springs on the radio. Tighter sticks give me a better sense of where center is.

...yep...

Great idea on the spring tension.

This is what I was thinking, sounds like its personal feel...

That is amazing video I hadn't seen that one!

Thank you for your input I look forward to more opinions.

Cheers,

Tighter sticks are good for starting out because ones hands tend to be rather tense, which results in not being able to 'feel' the sticks too well. As you improve and get more relaxed, you can release the spring tension and let yer thumbs nimble up somewhat.

As for being a thumber or pincher; swings and roundabouts. The only disadvantage of thumbing is the dreaded problem of thumbs slipping off the sticks during big continuous stirrs - however practice sorts that. Pinching is often claimed to be more accurate but then you're using twice as many finger joints which I find encoumbering. Each to his own.

Sharp stick ends are a must for just thumb flying! Futabas and Airtrx both usually come with sharp sticks that dig into your fingers. Junk Radios (JR) usually don't come with sharp sticks, but you can get them they just cost extra!

Unfortunately I have too many years flying thumbs to make the swap easily. Pinch feels incredibly restrictive and slow, but accurate.

If I was starting again it would be pinch. I'm still trying to get my head around crack rolls with thumbs, first time I've seen a clear advantage.

Just thumbs cannot match the stability, sensitivity, and control of 'finger & thumb'. That plus the ability to relax your digits.

I pinch with the left hand and thumb on the right. When I was first learning this didn't seem to matter. But, I do feel that I'm now inputting errors into the cyclic with my "thumb only" right hand.

Hey, I have a JR radio. Where can you get sharp stick ends, for my Junior?lol

I'd rather be flying

I started out using "thumbs" only when I first learned to fly. Thats until winter time came around and the temperatures dropped. My thumbs would get so cold that I couldn't feel the sticks with my thumbs, so I switched to the pinch method and have been using it ever since. What ever works best.

I use the thumb method and have no problem doing crack rolls. Thumbs slipping off the sticks during pirouetting flips is an issue though... but I have gotten a lot better about it.

I also loosen my sticks way up and keep the gimbals nice and soft. I can hardly fly another persons heli b/c of this habit.

I guess I chose the thumb method b/c I come from the Playstation generation and thumbs feel more natural to me.

PRO’s vs CON’s

Pros tend to make money by being good at a profession.
Cons tend to make money by swindling people.

That's the main difference.

I swear I'm not flying a DX7! Die-hard Futaba fan here!

I learned to fly planks when I was 9 using my thumbs. When I started helis I went with the pinch method cause I thought it'd help me keep the two separate and it's not a bad way to fly, but over time I just naturally gravitated to thumbs, so I gave up on the pinch flying and haven't looked back!

If you fly thumbs just keep plugging at it. The feel and control will come.
