Something to think about for all of the pilots out there that have any net worth that they want to protect.

If you are a hobbyist and follow the rules AMA and your home owners policies may protect you from an accident. It is a very good idea to ask your agent and get an umbrella policy to cover your "hobby" flying.

The pilots that are "sponsored" and "doing demo's" should all have other insurance. AMA will not cover a pilot once they are consider pro.

If you look at the lawsuits in the airplane industry you will see that negligence is very easy to prove. Just use the video of the Ircha crash by Henry Caldwell flying the Avant and you will see he is flying inside of the 50' safety circle and it would be very hard to argue to an average Joe that what is on the video is safe flying. Flying that tight to the flight line, low, and stressing the machine to near breaking point is just asking for something to happen. Sure it is cool, but does it make any sense.

In Dino's case he made a mistake and hit himself. That is much different as that appeared to be a plain accident. Keep in mind that if he hit someone else that there still could be major liability.

Now we have a 5 year old that hit a guy in the face with a T-rex. He may not have been at fault but he is 5 and he was holding the transmitter. It does not take a rocket scientist to tell you how the civil action will turn out in that case. The only question is who will be sitting at the defendant table, Dad? Sponsors? Event organizers?

Mike is right, safety is not center stage and it should be. The leaders in this should take charge and make changes before everyone is affected in a very bad way. I realize some of the thrill may be taken away but everyone still has a fun hobby to enjoy.

Where does it say that in the AMA insurance program and what are the guidelines they use determine if someone is pro or not?

hmmm - "How the community deals with safety issues."

Apparently by closing threads about it and trying to brush it under the carpet.

Any way you cut it a five year old kid cant fully comprehend the responsibility of flying model helicopters, especially when many other people's safety is in question, and anyone who thinks a five year old can, think back to yourself at five..... exactly

He may be good on the sticks, but IMO thats not the measure of a good pilot, a good pilot is one who is constantly thinking, 'if something goes wrong right now, whats the safest way out of it'

I'm betting that any five year old flying an R/C helicopter is not thinking like this, but thinking 'wow this is so cool' the whole time.

Personally I feel that Justin is being taken advantage of to feed his dads ego, and this was just a matter of time, and I seriously doubt that starting flying at shows was his idea in the first place

To have the stick skills to be flying those manuvoures he must have started at at least 3 yo..... come on, thats just rediculous, letting a 3 yo kid have control of a potentially lethal machine, one word keeps occuring to me - irresponsible (on the part of the parent)

Nice post Bad Karma. I see it pretty much exactly the same way you do.

I have little to no respect for this kids father.

If you avoid failure, you also avoid success.
