Safety - RC Helis are not toys > Editor in Chief of RC Heli Magazine was hit by a 90 at IRCHA

In case anybody has already heard, our Editor Mike Velez was hit by an Aurora at IRCHA less than an hour ago. He is doing fine. He took the brunt of the impact on his back and is getting stitches. The injuries are relatively minor compared to what could have happened. This hobby can be very dangerous and this is one of those unfortunate reminders to always keep safety in mind.

We here at RC Heli thank you for your well wishes and we are very thankful that Mike is doing fine and in one piece after doing battle with a 90 sized helicopter.

Oh my goodness, thanks for letting us know, Aaron - I am glad Mike came through. My families best wishes are with him. He is a great guy and you never like to hear about things like this, but they are a good reminder on how powerful these models can be.

Mike, sorry to hear about this man, heres to a fast recovery - but we are happy it wasnt worse - Jim

DINO ACCIDENT UPDATE VIA MFORTIN

There is not much to say about the accident. Wind was roughly 30mph and things happend rather quickly.

The heli was coming towards and Dino hit hold as it was approaching fastly. Dino turned to his right and raised his left arm and the blade tip caught him just above his left bicep.

Jeff Fassbinder was spotting for Dino at the flight station and was not injured. Dino was immediatly taken to on-site EMS where it was determined the laseration would require further care. He was transported via ambulance to the local hospital where the wound was cleaned and stiched with 4 stitches.

Dino returned to the hotel where he is fine and has a small bandage.

He will likely be flying on Saturday after some rest.

I have been watching the IRCHA 2007 videos here at RunRyder and can see how close the pilots and caller are from the heli. The helis are very aggressive in the maneuvers. No wired fence in front of the pilot and caller in case of emergency.
The only protection they have is the AMA insurance.

This is all a bit confusing. Did more than one person get hit? And, who was piloting the heli that did hit someone?
Mike, Dino, best of luck with the injury.

yes, two separate incidents here. Mike was taking photos of the noon demo today when the heli hit the ground and went straight for him.

Safety stats are not looking good this year, unfortunately. How were they on previous years?

Quick recovery wishes to all you guys.

Everyone is flying too close to themselves... unbelievable. Must have been a team pilot that hit the rcheli guy? Are there any aurora's flying that are not team pilots? Even more unacceptable, the pro's are putting the helis in life threatening positions.

I am not thrilled about the current trend in 3D. Flying low is cool, but it doesn't have to be at arms length...

Push them out boys!

I agree 1000% percent with Dr. Scoles! These heli's are not inherently reliable, and no matter how good the pilot things fail and what's gonna happen when someone gets killed due to this type of flying? Give yourself some distance for heck's sake!

In strong winds anything can happen. I agree they should push them out farther.
