Received my Hurricane 550 yesterday. The build was a breeze compared to some kits I have built in the past. Probably took a little longer due to changing out the ball links on the heli. I had read some of the concerns by others in regards to safety, and the lack of thread engagement using the Gaui screws. Man were they right!

Well on to the matter at hand. I purchased the basic kit with the 800kv motor, and ESC included. Well to my dismay, after finishing the build, and connecting the power, the darn ESC won't fire up. No confirmation tones, nothing. Checked my input voltage and am getting 22v+ from my 2 TP 2100 packs. I'm sure the folk's that I bought it through will make good on replacing the ESC. But, now that I have gotten this far, and the fact that I'm way to impatient to wait for a replacement ESC to arrive, I am thinking of running to LHS to pick up a ESC.

My question is this: The stock Gaui ESC is 50a, I know my LHS has 60a, and 75a. Being that I want to plan for the future of maybe a 1500kv motor, and 2-3300 mah packs which ESC amperage should I go for. And the more important question, will it work OK with my current setup?

fwiw...

Did you try epa to lower the low throttle point? Some escs need to be at 110/120 % at low throttle to arm...You also may need to reverse the throttle servo...

There is probably nothing wrong with your ESC. Connect the ESC to the trottle channel AND the BEC to the battery input on the ESC and you will be fine. Both need to be connected to the RX to make the ESC work.

celter thanks for the suggestion, I will try when I get home from work tonight. You may very well be right on target. Due to the lack of documentation on the ESC included I wasn't sure if it had it's own BEC, but was afraid of frying the whole works with power from the ESC, and my RX battery pack. I guess since the kit came with a seperate BEC, it would have been safe to assume no BEC in the ESC. I did do a voltage check across the rx lead from the ESC with the flight battery attached and got 0v. OK here's the embarrasing part, I had the rx battery pack installed at the same time as the ESC, but don't remember ever switching the rx power on, so used to all my other ESC's with built in BEC's that you plug in the flight battery, and things come to life.

Well, tryed celter's fix, and that got me part way there. The ESC now gives confirmation tones, but doesn't arm. I tried drdot's suggestion for changing low stick to 120%, and also reversing the direction, still nothing happening. The next question is if I have the motor hooked up properly. Going to show my ignorance here, I'm brand new to brushless motors. All of the motor wires coming from the stock Gaui motor are black, ESC has 3 color coded wires. Last week installed my first brushless in a Cessna model, and the prop was running backwards. Instructions with the ESC said to swap any two leads, and it would reverse motor direction. This worked. Due to this experience I'm working under the impression that it doesn't matter which wire goes to what lead. Is this an incorrect assumption? If so how can I determine which wire is neutral?

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to pull the motor back from the main gear as you are trying to figure this out.

Point well taken, have pulled back the motor already. Learned the hard way a couple of years ago, had one spool up on me on the bench when an ESC went crazy. Even without blades those flybar paddle pack a punch! Fortunately no injurys but my pride!

Yes, you can wire them any way you like. As you said, if the motor turns the wrong way, just switch 2 wires. I thing everything will work when you have connected the motor leads.

My Hurricane 550 came with the Gaul supplied ESC but included a note that said it DOES NOT contain an BEC so I had to power it up from a RX battery pack (which I really dislike).

I have now replaced the stock ESC with a 60amp one from DUALSKY.

This ESC has an internal "Switch Mode" BEC which means it's not wasting energy in heat like a linear regulator does, especially when stepping the voltage down from 22V to 5V.

It also has a nice remote On/Off switch (like my Quark33A) that fits the provided mounting slot on the side of the lower frame tray. The advantage of havin a remote switch is that you can connect the batteries and the canopy then carry it to the flight line, put it on the ground, switch on your TX and then your heli.

I'm getting 8.5 minute flight times using Air Thunder 2200mA packs.

Corona, 8.5 min. sounds great. I am going to use the Airthunder from now on in my Hurricane. How low do you discharge them? What about the CG with the AT batteries? My Hurricane is a bit tail heavy with my other batteries, but the AT batteries are a bit heavier, so I guess that would be perfect?

Use two airthunder 2200 packs, Hurricane 550 will be well balanced. There is no CG problem between Hrricane 550 and Airthunder.
