Antiques or Out of Business > Got me a 1987 X-cell 60 Series all original.

Hello all,

I finally was able to negotiate with a guy here in Mexico an X-cell 60 series helicopter. It was made in 1987 and the serial number is 2938. The helicopter was designed by W. Schoonard. The manual says Schoonard Helicopters, Fifty and Sixty Series.

I got in the package the orignal manual, a set of plans (two sheets) and extra canopy, original box the heli came in. I also got the orginal main rotor blades. It has a JR gyro from 1987 the three piece one don't know if I should use it. It seems to work.

The condition:

1. Washout and Swash are stuck to the main shaft, I do not believe they are fused. I am sure WD40 will do the trick.

2. Need a new clutch and the collar for the OS 61 engine. I do not know what model as I will have the engine in a couple of days. (where do I get a clutch bell housing and collar?)

3. The servo tray needs to be remade and I will make it in ply to keep the originality.

4. Vertical fin is broken and horizontal fin is missing.

4. Has to be completly disassembled, cleaned and put together with locktight

Here are the pics. Please throw all your thoughts and suggestions as I will start the restoration in about a weeks time.

Thanks,

Pavan
5. I plan on putting some good servos, 401/9254 and a PCM receptor.

I flew one of those until 2 or 3 years ago. It's a very good machine even being old. My one used to have only one bad habbit. If you abuse in the aerobatics and engine revs the main frame cracks between the start and main shats after some flights. If you want to keep it flying for a long time you can try the self aligning clutch from the newer models (1004 or Pro) it will probably reduce the main frame crackin. (Curtis Youngblood used to fly one of those and he used to add a aiframe doubler in the upper part of the main frame from starting shaft up to the tail boom clamp using a section of another main frame to add stiffness, rigidity). If you want to keep it 100% original, you will have to replace the swash plate anti-rotation bracket by the original plastic arm and linkage (see it in the drawings). My one used to have and Futaba mechanical gyro (153BB) and it worked very well. It's not close to the latest heading hold gyros but well set up it's very good (One more time, Curtis started to fly 3D with that type of gyro). Another ajdustment to take good care is the alignment of the tail rotor pinion and the main gear. In that X-Cells its very easy to build it baddly aligned and being prone to problems in the gears. The original aluminum shaft in the that tail output pinnion used to slip in the bearings making it play so make shure to add a little bit of locktite on those bearings or replace it with a steel one. My X-Cell used a OS61SFN-H with Performance Specialties AAC Piston/Sleeve and a V-Tech Pipe and with that setup was a very hot machine! Saddly I sold mine to a friend but happily it still flying in the original configuration. Looking your pictures It seems to have the Reflex Main Rotor blades (white root reinforcements) that are good, but not as good as the simmetricals (black root reinforcements) for aerobatics (and be carefull glueing the lead weights in the blades).

Good luck and keep flying,

Marco

I still have my x-cell 60 from the late 80's. It has not flown in several years. During the time it has set idle, the fuel tank cap cracked. I cannot find a replacement cap for the fuel tank anywere.

most of the Xcell fuel tanks were standard/stock Nalgene plastic

Thanks

Thanks everyone. I will pay close attention to all your comments. Infact I have already printed this valuable thread and have started looking for the clutch etc.

I have also bought the greasing system for greasing bearings and will shortly begin the restoration priject.

Thanks again.

Pavan

Hi,
I recently put my old 60 xcell back together and have returned it to service. My fuel cap was cracked also. I called Min Air about a replacement tank. Although they don't stock any of the older tanks anymore they did have some caps left. I think I paid a couple of dollars for a replacement cap.

bigdad390,
I have some old xcel parts in a box and my buddy Emile has some also. Let me check and see if I have a tank cap and I will also check with Emile. If I have one you are welcome to it.

bigdad390,

Try Nalgene Outdoor, I ordered some tanks for my Fury and they shipped fast and inexpensively as I recall. They also sell just the caps too.
