Main Discussion > Which Futaba gyro for 3d flying?

I'm slowly growing up with my flying skills where I started with a Futaba 240 on my little Trex, then the 401. Now with my 50 and 90 nitro machines I'm currently using the Futaba 401/9254 combo.

If I had the money I wouldn't think twice to just get a GY 611, but that is not the case so lately I've been closely watching out for a good deal for a Futaba 611 which looks like it holds its value pretty well, so the Futaba 601 and even the 501 have been looking like a viable option for me.

From the Futaba 401 to:

GY 501

GY 601

GY 611

just what is it that I can do with each gyro that I can't do with the 'lesser' models? The 401 is working fine for me, but I'm constantly being told that going backwards inverted requires the 611 if not the 601 gyro. Could I do just as well with the 501? What ever gyro I finally select I want to be able to justify its capability for the money I am spending and the level of flying I want to try.

This post involves the Futaba gyros because these are the ones I am familiar with and what I see a lot at the field I'm flying at.

Youve seen me beat the hell out of that 401 I had! Yes it doesnt "like" Backwards hurricanes, and it wags doing that move, but I NEVER had it blow out on me ever That little 401 of mine took me to piro hurricanes, piro loops, and piro snakes, before I really realised that was about it before that gyro, due to the whipping effecet.

A good solid tail set up doesnt hurt as well, Set up in normal mode, Carbon tail blades, your set for some fun.

Yeah Jason watching you fly backwards inverted from the trex 450 & mini Titan to the Raptor 90s proves the 401s worth -just think of what you might have done with the 611??

Do it with your eyes closed?

With that said are you saying that the 501s to the 611s isn't really necessary?????????

Thats what I was getting at yea. Unless you start to flip 2 ft off the deck, that 401 will be fine

Then I can save that $369 from the 611 and get better servos.

no such thing as a 501, 502, or 601 being made any more. Futaba's choices are somewhat slim now with just the 401, and the 611.

Phillip, another good choice is the Logictech 6100T. Watch for some great demos by really good pilot(s) using this gyro.

I'm using one on my 50 and it's rock solid.

Oh yeah I realize that, it's in the RR ads that I have seen them though. From what torkboy is saying maybe staying with the 401 isn't so bad!?!?!??

I also recommend the LogicTech 6100 as well. WAY cheaper and smaller than a 611 and I can tell a difference vs. the 401. Yes, the 401 can handle 3D but for us weekend warriors, the extra holding power of better gyros makes for a more enjoyable flying experience IMHO.

BTW does anyone know how much the 501/502 and the 601 gyros originally cost?

The new JR 770t & 8900 combo is worth a look, same price as the 401 but a bit better.

There is only one brand of Gyros worth concidering Futaba. They have led the market in gyro technology for years. I would recommed 611/601/401 only.

Kevin have you flown the LogicTech 6100 to make that comparison? I have.

Add one more vote for a 401.

Anyone telling you a 410 can't hang in high speed backward flight is just plain wrong. Just look at all the T-rex vids out there. 90% of those things are using a 401.

You won't really notice a difference between a 611 and 401 until you are pirouetting alot. Pirouetting funnels and similar maneuvers are where the 611 really shines.

I've flown the 401, 601, 611, and the 6100T. There is a different feel with the 6100T, but it's not a bad thing. I would recommend a 6100T to anyone trying to get a great budget set up.

The 401 is a great gyro, but in backwards flight it does get noisy. It usually holds great though. It does drift in stationary flips, and will not hold a consistent piroette rate in many manuvers however.

Here's the thing, if you're going to buy the cheaper option now, then sooner or later, you're going to end up with the better gyro anyway. If you buy cheap you buy twice. If you buy a better gyro now before you need it, you won't buy two. Make sense?

Hey JAGNZ I have only flown Futaba equipment from the beginning. I have heard a few people say that the LogicTech 6100 was a good gyro never actually seen one though.

On a calm wind day, the 401 is enough to do anything.
Unless you can do many magical maneuvers, then the top gyros such as the 611 is worth having.

I have a extra GY-501 that I might get rid of. I bought the 611 for my new .90 I had this gyro on a .90 vigor and It never let the tail blow. I find they are much tougher than the 401. I broke a gy401 case on my t-rex and it didn't even hit hard.
