After weeks of building, getting too busy with the family than giving one heli off and building the second...

Today she went up for the first time.

Isn't it strange I always have to reverse the tail servo and the gyro on just about everything I build.

I have the 600n with YS50 and JK Hatori muffler.

Hitec 6975HB's on swash
Fut 9254 on throttle
611

All of the metal mods.

Plus I doubled up the bottom plate so it's 4mm thick (epoxied)

I added a thrust bearing and collar under the upper bearing block and made sure it is carrying the main shaft load and not the main gear/oneway. I think I gain some power here and possibly longer oneway life.

This thing rips.

YS started on like the second spin and went right into an idle.

Here's the thrust bearing..

Mike - you going to be at Helis over Delaware? If you are... I would like to check out your thrust bearing mod in person. Sounds Cool!!

I am going to be there Friday.

Thanks - Brent

The main gear and or one way bearing doesn't carry the load you're trying to take up with the thrust bearing. The one way shaft carries the load. The thrust bearing you installed potentially moves the carrying load from the middle bearing to the top bearing during upright flight. Wouldn't just the extra collar pressing the against the inner race of the upper bearing have done the same thing and what's the advantage? I just see more weight but I'm probably missing something.

If what you are saying is true than we wouldn't need thrust bearings in the main and tail rotor grips, just washers.

A large percentage of forces are trying to pull the main shaft out of the heli. Concentrating the forces onto a bearing designed to handle thrust loads gives you less rotational friction under load and less stress on parts not necessarily designed for thrust loads.

Vario uses the same setup in it's big gassers.

As far as weight it concerned.. Not worried about that as it's not that heavy.

Looks good, but I'd get the fuel filter away from your switch wire. It may end up chafing into it.

So would there be a substantial benefit to run a thrust under the top collar also for the negative side? (in theory)

or better yet above the second block, no interferance w/swash.

What is your thrust bearing resting against opposite the collar? Is it the inner or the outer race of the upper bearing. What's keeping the thrust bearing from binding up the upper bearings? If the thrust bearing is against the inner race of the radial bearing your still putting the same load as before on the radial bearing. Really if you're planning on using thrust bearings you'd need one for upright loads and one for inverted loads. I don't know about most people but I spend at least as much time inflicting inverted loads on the heli as I do upright loads. Not saying I don't like the idea I just don't see how it's working in this case.

It's resting on the plastic of the bearing block. Never touches the main shaft bearing at all. I agree on the both sides but the stackup is too high on the top side which limits swash cyclics at low pitch. Bill has the idea... put another set on top of the middle bearing block.

I see now, clever! One on top of the middle block would finish it off nicely.

Is this the Mikado thrust bearing from the Logo 14?? Looks like it...

I think this is a good thing as on my pro the one-way bearing has moved down a mm so now the one way housing rubs on the lower bearing housing. this happened on my 5 flight when i notised a whar whar sound when spooling down.

It doesn't give you a problem riding on the plastic of the bearing block?? I would imagine it could wear on the bearing block this way.

It's a 3-piece thrust bearing. The outsides are large flat washers with internal radial grooves for the inside ball bearings.

The flat part sits stationary on the bearing block surface. No movement, no wear.

Where can we get the exact washer. What size is it? Who makes it. If it helps I'm game. Just need to know where to get it.
Still not clear where it is either. IS the thrust under the collar on the main shaft?
