e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > AirThunder 5000mah Testing Begins

Today I received my AirThunder 5000mah 6s1p pack, it is on the charger as I write this. It has the same balancing port as the Align 6S packs and fits on the Trex 600 perfectly. It is a little heavier than the TP packs but the extra weight balances the 600 perfectly. I will be shooting some video and posting some flight data tomorrow. I cant wait...

1st Flight Video

Well we tested the battery on Sunday and it worked flawless. I am really suprised how this battery performed on its first flight. ( no breakin ) Its pretty weird seeing a 600 run until it just hits the cutoff and falls. This battery has allot of punch right out of the box. Im pretty excited to do some further testing on this battery. The Eagle Tree data will be posted as soon as I get it working on my new computer, its having driver issues with Windows Vista. I had to post the video using Google because the file was to big for YouTube. Stay tuned for further testing results...

Looks good so far.

How much did you put back into the pack after that run?

How much does your TP pack weigh compared to the AP pack?

Excited to see how these work out.

Lee

Can you be a little more specific on the weights?

Pretty cool on the discharge! ;-) Now will they LIVE after that kind of abuse is the question!

I have a TP 4500 pack and it's quite a bit smaller/lighter then the specs on the AP Pack. I know the 5000s weigh a bit more. If the AP Packs weigh less then the comparable FP/TP 5000s that would be great.

Thanks,
Lee

I have been testing AirThunders 2200mah pack that I have 103 cycles on it and it was drained down to 0 volts every 10th cycle and over discharged on every cycle and it still works perfect...

Air_Alpheus:

Do you have an exact weight difference between the TP and AP 5000 packs?

Thanks,
Lee

They are goin on sale tonight is US around 9 CDT.
The price is $266.00 USD for the 6S and $237.00USD for the 5S both 5000mAh.
I got mine coming.
I got the 3s and 2s and performed excellent. I use the 2s for the electronics and the 3s for my 450.

Batteries

What was the voltage at the end of the flight and how much voltage variation between cells? What is the weight of the pack in grams? You've stated it's both heavier and lighter than the TP pack. Can you tell us the actual weight? Is there any gaurantee of longevity running it to basically 100% capacity on every flight? I can get about 5 minutes of flight from the TP Extreme packs and put 80% back in, I would expect if I ran it to the bitter end I could get close to 6 1/2 minutes run time, too. It's just that I could only do it once. I'm curious if the manufacturer is willing to put any kind of gaurantee behind the claims. Where can I buy one? Thanks. steve.

Steve:

They don't recommend purposely abusing them. I.e. you should not regularly run them down to 100% empty. Just if you push them once in awhile, it's not going to ruin the battery.

Our specification is 2V per cell minimum on our 2S, 3S and 4S packs and 2.5V minimum per cell on our 5S or larger packs. Please observe these specification when using our packs. We cannot guarantee anything if the specification is not followed. Basically you can fly your aircraft until you feel the power start to diminish, or rely on the LVC on your ESC. There is no need to worry about the 80/20 rule with our pack, but our packs are not indestructible.

If you use our packs on cars or boats, make sure you use LVC.

Thanks.

The voltage was ran down to around 15.6 volts at the end of the flight in the video.

Hello Barry,

Can you please explain why it's possible to discharge the cells in your 2S-4S packs to 2.0V each but the cells in 5S+ packs to only 2.5V each? Aren't the cells in a 2S 5000mAh pack the same as the cells in a 5S 5000mAh pack? If so, why can the cells in the 2S pack be discharged lower than the cells in the 5S pack?

Specs say not to charge faster then 1C. If they will stand up to faster charging using a high quality charger and balancer like the TP1010, I'd like to hear from Airpower on that.

Thanks!

Our single cell can in fact be discharged to extremely low voltage. As the cell count in a pack increases however, so does the complexity of the dynamics between cells. When you discharge a pack to low voltage, the dynamics can cause the polarity of one or more cells in the pack to be reversed at times. That's when you will ruin the pack. We must be more conservative as the cell count increases. Setting a higher minimum discharge voltage will give you the safety cushion needed for higher cell count.

Hope this answered your question.

Thanks.

I just do not understand the mentality behind running any model till it barely will sustain lift... I realize the point behind saying this in all being able to discharge the battery that low. However in logic just because you can does not mean it is smart to do for several other reasons, mainly safety and properly being able to control the model upon decent is something to always keep in mind.

I think the point is that these Lipos appear to be a bit more durable than whats currently available,it is a bit of a bind having to stick to the 80% rule and these packs just give a better safety margin..

I am quite happy on the odd flight to fly around for a good 5 to 6 mins and then do some hovering around until it dies off

I will be watching this thread with great interest and i hope they hold out as well as the 2200`s seem to have

Please can we have regular updates, the odd vid and data charts...

Cheers
