fwiw...

Got to fly and help set up a freinds 550 today...I've been watching this heli closely, as I think the 500 size may be ideal for most flying..

Heli is stock, using Gaui esc and motor, with two generic 20 C 2100 packs.
Blades are the 500mm stock woodies,
Heli is using separate batt and reg for radio power, standard size servos..

Here's the scoop....Heli flys far better than I would think...Not a powerhouse, but most 3D maneuvers are well within its reach..We tracked it, which wasn't easy as there was a twist in one blade...Hovered it for about a minute...Trim was right on, so we went back for fresh batts..

Lifted off, flew around one circuit, all's well...
Idle up, hs now at 1940..eerily quiet, like a 450 Rex with a muffler..

Loops, rolls...no sweat...Tic tocs, all day..Inverted, tail slides, backward flight, tail is rock solid...Remember, this is the First flight on this heli..pitch is a little slow, roll about right..Now we start the autos...VERY nice! Not a 50, but much better than Lepton..All on the so so woodies!

All in all, a formidable heli..I'd like to see one built with a bec to eliminate the separate battery, and find some way to get 94761 servos to fit..then put on a pair of 3200 25C lipos...
Big thing to me is we flew for 7 minutes on two T rex packs...We're no Szabos, but we flew it fairly hard, and did three really high autos.
Batts were same or cooler than a typical Rex 450 flight, the motor not even warm..
If this is the start of what can be done with this size machine, we might get 8 minutes of 3D, good auto capability, and a reasonably sized quiet heli all in one package. Sign me up.

I note that ReadyHeli has a short boom conversion,a high performance motor, and a metal head assy. already...Let the games begin!

I hope Align is watching...Looks like Jason & Co. has a way to go to beat this one!

drdot,
Nice review. I've been looking at possibly purchasing this heli, so this looks like another "two thumbs up" evaluation. Thanks for taking the time to post your info.

Cool,

I can't wait, I am waiting for my UPS truck to show up today with mine. So far I got nothin done at work today and UPS IS LATE!!!! I did order a set of carbon blades other then that mine will be stock as well. can you tell me what color is your motor?? do you know the KV rating of it? I ahve seen the KV listed between 800, and 890, and a all silver motor and one that is silver and red? But I don't know if the colors mean anything?

Mine came yesterday afternoon, Got one short flight in last night before dark, you said sounds like a trex with a muffler man you are right, SOO quiet! the gear trans make no noise at all. mine is also stock with the Gaui esc, 850kv motor and i used some generic 2200mah 18c packs which unfortuntly one went bad, hopefully I will get my hew packs today, I got about 4 minutes before my pack lost it's guts (one cell puffed) but climbouts were better then my Gohbee 50, rolls were nice but not as fast as my Trex 450 but faster then a raptor with stock paddles, flips were good, although continuous stationary flips did bogg it down. single flips and rolls were good though. after 4 minutes my packs were barely warm but one pack had a puffed cell. my forst flight was with the stock woodies, I put a set of carbons on and went again but with just a old set of Evo 1800's these packs now barely fly my Trex, but acctually did better in the Huricane, I only did climbouts and some circuits, head speed was way down(again these packs are old and will only hover my Trex) after 3 minutes the packs were warm. but probably about the same as how they come out om my Trex. esc was cool, and motor was pretty warm, has anyone checked temps on the motor? what is normal for this size motor?? I only have my JGF450 or car motors to compare to? I did not check temps but you could still hold it but it was hot!

right now I have Junk std servo's in it. I couldn't wait to fly it. I will probably put the Jr digi's in it later this week. and I am using a 401 w/9253 on tail.
If you were to compare this heli to a Raptor 50. I would say this.
out of the box they are real similiar, the Raptor is larger. the hurricane rolls and flips a little faster then a stock Raptor with the stock black paddles, not bad but not real quick. climbouts, well the hurricane easily beats a stock R50, throw a hyper and muscle pipe and carbons on the Raptor and now your looking at the Hurricane out of the box. again multiple flips starts to loose head speed just like a stock R50, my guess is with better batteries this will be better. the hurricane Blows away any 30 nitro heli for sure!!

Is this the SE or the standard kit you are talking about?
Was looking to get this for an aerial photograpy setup...wondering how much payload it could lift..

fwiw..

Here's an update...Got to fly the 550 again today with Century 515 carbon blades...Did slow the cyclic a bit, but still capable of slow SMOOTH 3d...Flew about 7 minutes, switching pilots, and all I can say is BUTTAH!...this thing is so smooth it's amazing!...Many won't like the reduction in cyclic, but we don't have the heli tuned up all the way as the owner is still intermediate, but the flight characteristics are great...This is the first small electric I'd actually say someone could learn autos on..On the 515 blades, I could make a case for it autoing better than my 600 Rex..Even with the slow cyclic, inverted auto was easy, and locked in very positively...A death spiral looks like it happens in slow motion..
Best for last...On two T rex packs, we used only 1300 mah each for 7 minutes of pretty hard flying...Next is a short boom with 475 blades....Batt temps 95, motor about 100...

Yea, I got 6 flights in this weekend on some new batteries, i got t new Evo 2170 packs and 2 of the new 2500 evo's. the 2500's are the way to go since I got them at Hobby town for $80 each. I only put 3-4 minutes on each pack since they were new but, this heli does fly smooth, flips are very nice and large loops are done with ease, the only problem is the roll rate is slow, I am not going to complain yet since I am running junk servo's adn will probably change them out this week. with the stock motor it has ok power but some more head speed would be nice. my batteries are not hardly even warm. I would like to find a little hotter motor so will probaly get the new Gaui motor 1100kv soon.

I broke in my Evo 2500's and on my 4th flight I got 7 minutes of fairly hard flying, lots of flips rolls, piro's climbouts, FFF, tight turns etc. I will most likely set my timmer for 6 minutes next flight and see how well it will funnel with the stock motor, if it will I will be happy. I didn't want to try to much till I got a few flights on my new Packs. but it now seems to roll a bit better it is holding a little more head speed since the batteries have a few fights on them.

Motor temps

A rough way to estimate the motor temperature; if you can hold it for some time, it's beneith 50 deg. celcius (~122 Fahr.). Most people feel they are burning themselfs above this temperature.

Sorry I don't have a way to video. I am going to make some Carbon paddles this weekend and see what that does. I know I can get a set made under around 15G and a little more aggressive, but not sure what the stock weigh

fwiw..

Been doing some number crunching in collaboration with an engineer friend who owns the 550..
What is the thinking on someting like this..
get the hurricane down to under 4 lbs..Mini servos, bec for electronics, new Spektrum mini Rx..go to short boom, 475/500 mm blades..possibly a custom frame of 1.5 mm G10..Rotorworkz may be on this already..hollow main shaft would help..
Whole idea is to get a favorable disc and power loading to allow this heli to 3D and auto well, at about 650 700 watts..Heli should auto well at this weight and loading, but still get acceptable flight time on 2 2200 packs.
Any one has any ideas, plese post...Food for thought..HS 65 MG digital servos would probably work on this heli..

Hi John!!

Could you please clarify your post to me and, also I have a few questions.

How does the heli do auto with the manufacture configuration or recommendations?

Have you try or set the heli for 3D with the manufacture configuration and recommendations. How is the performance in 3D for this heli.

Can you change the motor for a more powerful one? What do they recommend?

What is the max pitch that you can have in the heli (negative and positive)

Because if I have to do all of these for this heli to make the heli do some basic 3D and auto, to me it is not worth it. I will look for another heli. I am not comparing this heli to the T-REX 600.

So could you please clarify your post John

thanks

concept could you please give me some input about the heli capabilities on 3d and auto?

fwiw..

This is a work in progress, so I have no firm info...The heli is configured for a novice /intermediate, and as such is slower than it is capable...It is incredibly smooth, and while it is 3D capable out of the box, it needs more power for the fast 3d crowd...That said, the new motor on 475 blades looks very powerful..I have not flown that config yet, but will soon, and will post my impressions...
As far as autoing, it is as good or better than the Rex 600 with 515 carbon blades..which is saying something. The stock 500 mm woodies auto well, but are too draggy...We will be setting the 475 version up to be hotter, and will see how well it autos with the shorter blades..I feel this heli will improve with time, as did the Align helis...Supposedly there will be more announcements by readyheli at IRCHA...Stay tuned...
