Im hoping someone can help me out before I need it.
I keep reading about auto rotations as a way to land in one piece if the motor fails. So far I have been unable to find anywhere that explains whats involved.
My motor cut recently when I was hovering at about 4 feet - the heli was already on the ground by the time my brain realised what was going on. As I still had my training gear on there was no damage.

www.ronlund.com is a good place to start.

Got to the FAQ page, scroll down until you see the auto question,
then follow the link.

That is a good link.

The Idea is that the rotor has more energy stored in it than required to fly (for a short period) with the pitch set to a small amount of neg. (2-4 deg) the inner portion of the rotor will "drive" the rotor to maintain or increase rotor speed. the trick is to "manage" the decent rate and rotor speed to arrive at your landing spot with excess rotor speed to allow a soft landing.

Its quite fun and challenging on a 30. On a 60 its a lot more fun because of the extra inertia held by the blades which gives you more time at the point of landing and also doing aerobatics in the descent portion of the auto.

4 feet is plenty enough to practice your auto landings, I can start at 10 feet and still land softly with my Raptor 30. The Fury is a piece o' cake, love it.

I would defenitely learn autos asap. My first auto I was forced into when my fuel clunk got stuck in the tank after and roll. (Replace fuel lines every 6 months). It was successful, but I would like to have been better prepared. Scared the bejibas out of me if you know what I mean.
Presently I can auto from 10ft. But setting it up from altitude is challenging. For some reason when I go fly, I just want to fly, and never think to practice auto's. I should change and practice, so I get comfortable with them. Does anybody else have this problem?

It's only a problem until you start to get the hang of an auto - then you can spend tankfuls doing just auto's. One of my favorite times at the field is when the wind starts to pick up and everyone atarts to put their airplanes away - perfect auto weather. The only drag is everyone gets their stuff cleaned up and they're driving away before I'm ready to go .

gforce - where in Jacksonville do you fly? I'm about 35 minutes north of you in Saint Marys, GA (exit 1 off I95). Maybe we can get together sometime!

Hey Mike, I fly at gateway rc club, just west of jax airport on lem turner road. Thinking about flying tomorrow - monday - let me know if your into going. I would love to see some auto's to learn from and get some advice. I think I may have to much neg. pitch in my throttle hold settings. What do yous guys do auto's with. neg 2 neg 4?

I agree with David regarding the throttle hold setup. I initially learned with the bottom at -4, but you learn bad habits like slamming the collective all the way down until its time to flair. Once I set my throttle hold curve to match my Idle1 curve, I learned to use the collective to adjust my descent rate. As a result, I fly the heli down all the way, and my autos are much better.

gforce - I don't know if all this rain will be dried up before tomorrow. I would be glad to come fly with you guys sometime. Send me an email (fendley at tds.net) and I'll get directions from you - I know where the Lem Turner exit is off I295, but have no idea where to go from there. I'll bring at least my Intrepid - I have just about finished my Fury with the OS91, but I'm still working on the canopy. I'm going to end up with more time on the canopy than I did with the kit!

That sounds like the right way to do it. Get used to your auto's having the same pitch as you idle 1. With -9 to +9 on idle 1, I guess I would want to start my auto with about 1/4 stick or -4.5deg. I like the idea of learning it this way. Who wants to retrain your brain when it is hard enough to train it the first time. thanks for all your help. Mike, I will email you directions to the club. Unfornuately most of the guys there are airplane only, so im like the lone ranger when it comes to heli's. So a heli flying buddy would be much appreciated. And I would really like to see your furry with the 91. If we go, please bring it along, even if it's not ready to fly yet, I haven't seen one in real life yet. Just as long as it doesn't outshine my 99 se. Which is a whole other subject in itself isn't it. Se ya.

Outshine! You gotta be kidding - you have obviously never seen one of my home-painted canopies

I have one ordered through Joe@canopy-FX, but won't see that for a couple of weeks. I'll definately bring the Fury along, gotta figure out how to start the beast. My starter has those battery packs (7.2v each) but its just barely turning the OS 91. I have the packs on charge now, and we'll see if we can awake the monster. Should be easier to start after the first couple of times.
