That's a real shame.

The tail never looked very solid and there seemed to be a lot of forward swash to keep it in hover (maybe that's just the model).

Obviously by the time it landed something was WAY out of balance!

that was well unstable in flight,

it looks like as he came in to land that last fast stop by applying power and back stick caused something to come loose.

It looks like something on head - the washout, had come loose and as the blades slowed down they resonnaited.
thus causing the funkey chicken dance.

Very sad - but i am sure the Doc will post the cause so we all can take note.

Looked like he was flying in high winds, this was making it choppy and unstable looking. As for the shake apart....did the blades start to fold when his sit it down hard????

looks like to me that the support between the mechanics and the fuselage had failed. took of flew around fine yes tail looked heavy . but the fusalage is hanging from the mechanics while in the air and doesnt need much support. however when landing the fusalage is supporting the mechanics if a support is broken the fuselage will buckle .
that what i think may of happened. anybody asked the owner what he thought happened?
its not nice to see this sort of thing happen after all that hard work.

Hi Guys!
wow nice to see all the comments and thanks for your concerns.
it liiks like gmebey came closest to guessing what happened. seems the blades did not like the hard landing and they started an oscilation or ressonance. i believe if the blades were tighter in the grips, it would not have happened but when this happens, the only thing to do is ride it out. i tried shutting the engine down as fast as i could and hoped. as for the damage, it isnt bad at all and came out better than when the rotorhead's "jesus" bolt sheared in flight last july just two weeks before IRCHA (placed 2nd there)
as lady luck would have it, the blades, rotorhead and all mechanical components are fine and only some minor cosmetics to repair. i always ran the blades a bit loose in the grips because if too tight, they wont swing out evenly and cause shaking. i think now i may just have to runthem a bit tighter. as for the unstable look in flight, it was windy as hell and the most wind i have ever flown her in so it was a new and horrorfying experience. as for the tail heavy look, well it isnt tail heavy, the blackhawk has a 3 degree forward mast tilt so it will have a level attitude in cruise flight. this results in a nose high attitude when in the hover and on the approach.
the hard landing was due to me trying to make the circle for those extra points on the landing. i knew better than to do that because yo dont lose any points if you dont hit it but i was lucky during the first round and figure i'd go for a second try. oh well, it happens. no worries however, it isnt the first accident with her and as i plan to fly it till the end of days, it probably wont be the last
during the build, i had this same thing happen with another rotorhead that had a lead lagging joint. these blades just do not like that at all so i changed it to the current head. guess they dont like being loose in it either so tighter they'll run in the future.
thanks for posting that vid BMW, i will learn a lot from that.
also it was quite a pleasure chatting with you and your wife and i sure hope to see you again at other future events.

Ground Resonance?

Doc,
Sorry to see such a beautiful model self destruct like that. Fortunately mostly cosmetic. Found some very pertinent videos on Youtube.com and thought the others might like to look at them. Looks almost exactly like what happened to your beautiful bird.

Just an update, the hawk is almost ready to go again. the mechs, blades and rotorhead were unhurt and this downtime has given me the opportunity to redo a few things i have been wanting to do but just wasnt wanting to disassemble the machine to do them.
the only sad part of this mishap was that it took place on my birthday that i was unaware of til dear ol' mother called me the next day to wish me a happy belated. all's well that ends well.

unfortunately there arent many hawk fuses on the market. century and another manufacture located in europe are the only ones i am aware of. anyway, as for making a juliet model, that may be up to you. the one i did was a lima model and i have seen the hh60 and mh60 built from the same kit. the mods are up to you.

I've loked at the century one, do you know the name of the other manufacture in europe by chanse. Making the changes to a J model wont be to big of a problem, seen how I work on them.
Thanks again

Good news!

my hawk is back up and ready for IRCHA!
fortunately, there was only cosmetic damage to the fuse.the blades, rotorhead and mast were all fine. i am running the blades a little tighter than i did the day of the incident and after 3 tankfulls which included a few runon landings and several not to cushy landings, no sign of any problems. i have a video of the first flights in my backyard but have no clue how to upload. will post pics instead.
