Ok, had a brand-new in the box Shogun V1 given to me the other day and put it in the closet because I'm spoiled with my Trex's. I don't have any projects going right now, so the more I think about it, the more I want to get the little bird in the air. I have several power systems and miscellaneous electronics laying around, so here's a list of what I have...tell me if I can build a decent Shogun from this stuff, as well as any mods necessary to make it reliable.

New Shogun V1 kit
E-flite HH gyro
Blade CP cf blades
3 E-flight S75 servos
3 Hites HS56's
Align 430l/3550 motor
Align bl35g esc
Spectrum 6100 rx
Trex landing gear
Trex canopies

- A box full of metal head parts from my Rexes...(they're heavily upgraded).

...I've read about upgrading the tail drive, so which one? Is there a mod to get rid of all the z-bend linkage? How do these little guys fly compared with my Trex's? I'm hoping I've got enough parts to make a good flying heli, possibly indoors, without breaking the bank...would like to be able to use my Trex batteries also.

Let me know your suggestions...

Adam

I wish my thumbs understood heli-theory as well as my mind does...

The Blade CP rotors are going to be a little short. The only real tail mod is to convert the frame to belt drive, but I don't know if you'll find it anywhere.

I'd be very interested to hear how much of the Trex head will work! Trex tail boom is 12mm and the Shogun V1 is only 9mm, so that probably won't work too well.

The motor may be a little big.

The landing gear will need new holes drilled for the mounting screws.

Suggest the S75 on collective, and the HS56 on tail, elevator, aileron, unless you rig it for 120 degree CCPM and then I'm not sure what you should do.

Tail belt drive kits can be found through searches on the net (Microheli, Heliup etc.) I would be tempted (in the interest of saving some money) to find a V2 on ebay. This can be done very cheaply and you will then have all the set up in place for the tail/belt drive. Upgrade the tail to Micro heli's ali enclosed gearbox, slider etc. The head is unusual on Zooms in so far as the mainshaft is hollow and there is a wire running up the centre to adjust the pitch. I'm not sure if you migh be able to work around the rex head with this. I have a V2 and it's quite a cool little heli, lively responsive and, when set up correctly, fun to fly. Basically, you will have to spend a little but won't find your little indoor heli to be a disappointment....there are 100 Trex owners out there getting ready to undermine my point of view but hell, who cares....Protech was there first!Good luck

I wouldn't worry about changing the tail to belt drive. I've had absolutely no problems with the shogun V1 gear drive after two seasons of flying and banging the heli around a lot.

Pull the shaft out of the tail boom and locktite the three bearings to the shaft and you'll have no problem unless you bang it up real bad which would give the same results with a belt drive.

the bearings at the shaft ends can migrate up the shaft a bit if not loctited and this allows the drive shaft end to flex and the end gears to ride up over the other gear causing stripping problems.

the shogun is no where near as aggressive as a trex, but is a great little heli, very stable. Flew mine indoors last winter.

Hey Astro
I have had friends who have had no problems with their tails on the Zoom V1 but I (and lots of people on this site also have) have had loads of stripped gears. Without heavy handed treatment I have had three sets 'let go' midair! This is not only uncomfortable and dangerous, its also very expensive as you hit the ground with no tail authority. I hear what you say and I think you are one of the 'lucky ones'. The additional bearing idea is a must if you stay with the bevelled gears. I used indenting on the outside of the boom to hold the bearings in place. And to get the old ones out....cigarette lighter and a chopstick LOL. My belt driven Shogun V2 (same heli in all but name) flies very well and is so much quieter than the stock gears

I have got one of the very early Zoom's (bought it on Protech's release day in the UK) and it's a POS. The tail gears have stripped several times mid-air causing various damage and the rest of the heli is poorly engineered for the money. I changed to the updated bevelled gear rather than crown and pinion and that solved the tail end but still breaking gears at the main gear to tail shaft pinion. I wouldn't care, but I treated it with kid-gloves and it was always immaculately prepared. (I had $600 sunk in it at new).

That said, I heard the later ones were much better plus you got it free so hey, nothing to lose...!

Be interested to see if I can stick some newer parts / fixes on mine as it's sat in storage looking forlorn and hasn't been flown in years.

go with the dyi belt conversion. $30 in parts and you get a direct belt drive. been using it going on 2 years...never had a problem with it.

Huh?

Having battled input gear failures with my V1 Shogun, I've got to agree with hueyman. If you haven't seen the link before, this is another RR member's DIY belt drive mod. It really works well.
