Tandem Rotor Helis Vertol Chinook > "Vario" Chinook in the air

Well I was determined to fly my Chinook today even if there was a 20/30mph wind blowing, nobody can call me a fair weather flier.!
I've spent all week putting the mechanics into the fuselage and today had to be the day.

I kept the height down to below hedge level and had a few hovers in my front field, I need to adjust the throttle/pitch curves now to compensate for the extra weight of the fuse but appart from that it was quite uneventfull. Looking forward now to some decent weather here in the UK and then I can do some more test flights.

fredd, the full design and build of my Mk1 mechanics can be seen on the Vario Fan Club site. The Mk2 version I'm flying now is the same design but using carbon fibre and glass filled nylon instead of aluminium.

Here is a photo taken of the Mk2 version with a high shutter speed, it is flying.!

OK Guys here is a video taken during the UK Vario Northern Event at the beginning of June this year.

http://rc2rotors.co.uk/doc/Chinook2.wmv

At this time I was flying with 100% elevator and 0% DCP (all part of the validation process of Joel's new tandem mixer) and it was a bit of a handfull.!

Since then I have changed to 100% DCP and very little elevator, just like the full size.

Hopefully I should get this weekend's video posted of the complete helicopter flying before the end of the week.

Stan,

You know what I say... if one multi-bladed head is GOOD, then two multi-bladed heads is BETTER!

Well guys, believe me it's certainley different flying 2 large multi-blade heads on one machine and keeps your mind well and truly focused.

I will be at the Vario UK event all next weekend, if the weather is OK then I'll be flying.

Rich, I am completely certain that you are dead on with that statement!!!

BUT, it is an amazing feeling/achievement to make one of these guys go and I am just waiting and watching for a shot at a larger one... just to watch them spool up is a "kick"!!!!!!!!!!

Joel, you are SO RIGHT!!!!!!

Rich best of luck this weekend and hope to see some more video....

What is that stand for ? Diffrential Cyclic Pitch is my guess.

Thanks for the mech view, I always wanted to see what goes on inside the fus.

DCP

DCP stands for "Differential Collective Pitch"

To initiate a rotation in the pitch (elevator) axis, the collective pitch changes between the front and rear swashplates. The swashplate with more pitch will rise and the one with less pitch will fall.

Sorry guys, I would love to attend the Alcester fun fly especially now I've fitted a larger engine since the Vario weekend, but I've got to go to Singapore on Saturday on business.

If Dave turns up with his turbine Chinook give him my regards and I expect to see him next year when we can fly them both together.

If any scale people in Singapore want to meet up next week just let me know, between work, bars and girls I'm sure I'll have some free time.
