Computer Flight Simulators > Realflight G2 controls

Location:

I purchased the realflight G2 with control. It's been suggested that I should have gotten the interface to use my Futaba 8 UHPS with instead. Previously I was told that I should not wear out my radio while flying on the computer and that the computer could wipe out the transmitter if it developes a problem while attached. Contrary to that, i was just told that I should use my transmitter so as to become familiar with it and make sure it works properly before I actually fly with it. What's the consensus on that?

Should I have gotten the interface to use my transmitter or did I make the right decision to get their control unit?

I use the interface with my 'real' transmitter. Back when I was starting, the simulator taught me a lot about programming the radio, and I think that was useful. I doubt you're in any danger of "wearing out" or damaging the transmitter in any way, I've been using mine for years both at home and at the field. Airline baggage handlers are the real threat.

Snce you already have a controller, it's hard for me to say whether or not it would be worth the money to upgrade. IMO it's good to be familiar with the box you'll have in your hands at the field, it makes the simulation that much more complete. Is it worth the price? That probably depends on your wallet.

My view on this

I wish I had the control unit.

I would not have to take my TX out of my car.
I would not have bounce checked my TX and busted a switch off it.
I would not have needed to buy a second battery
I would not have had to go back to my house after driving to the field cause my TX was connected to my computer.
I would always have the controler connected to my PC and fly when I got the urge.

Getting the point here?

I agree with volkul. My transmitter is A. Very Expensive and doesn't need to be carted around the house constantly and B. Is 3 floors away from my computer. I like having the controller permanently connected for quick practice.

The only issue I have seen with the controller is what seems to be a 'bug' while doing certain 3D like pirouetting flips. It doesn't seem to like simultaneous rudder and hard cyclic inputs in that it keeps piro-ing after I release the rudder and until I neutralize the cyclic. Could just be a bug on my version or something and the problem could be the same with the interface to your radio.

In general, for most practice (especially orientation) and with the exception of really wild 3D, the controller box is great.
