Hello all

I recently picked up a Shogun V2 from the Hobby People as they were on sale for $79.99. It seems as if this chopper is a thing of the past compared to the T-Rex and other micro helicopters available but I know that the V2 is a better helicopter than I am pilot. For that reason I am looking for a good starting setup as this will be my learning machine. I am currently using a Himaxx 2025-4200 Brushless inrunner motor with a CC Phoenix 25 ESC. As for servos I am using 3 HS-55's with an HS-81MG (and Align HH Gyro) on the tail. Are there any other items (or upgrades) that are needed for a budding pilot to make this work?

I have been into RC planes for 10+ but this is my first full function micro helicopter.

Thanks
Loren

Those electronics will work well enough for now. If this is your first heli, a set of training gear will save you money in broken parts.

After you go through the first tail gear, this is a solid upgrade.

RE setup

I fly the Shogun V2 around quite a bit out at my neigborhood park in Beaumont, CA. The Shogun is a great helicopter as long as it is properly set up. What you've got so far will work just fine. A few setup examples to be aware of with this kit include: watch for too tight of a gear mesh when you install your brushless motor, for you may need to file out the motor mount holes with a jeweler's file; the swashplate bearing needs to be superglued to the rotating and non-rotating plates to prevent bearing-swashplate separation in flight, or tiny screws could be used to accomplish this; flybar paddle alignment and paddle distance from the main mast out of the box may be off, for this could cause vibration; ditch the foam blades when you start getting into faster forward flight, they don't track very well and they tend to cause the ship to porpoise in flight,(Helihobby or Helidirect have good alternative blades); check to make sure the tail rotor shaft is not bent, for mine was out of the box and caused severe vibration, along with tail rotor pitch change bearing failure. This is very critical for it spins at around 9000 to 11000 RPM. Take the gearbox apart to get it out and place a flat edge against the shaft to see if it is true; check the belt tension, shouldn't feel tight as a drum nor should it feel loose.

Do you have a radio for this ship? I highly recommend the Spektrum DX-6 or DX-7 DSM band radio. Entirely eliminates glitching. For batteries, I'm happy with the Impulse 2100 16C from Hobby People. A little pricey, but worth it if you don't want to gamble with whether the pack is gonna puff or not.

That's my two cents off the top of my head. Feel free to ask any more questions, and I'll try to get back to you when I can. If sometime you wanted to come on out to where I fly, since you're not too far away, I'd be glad to look your ship over. Without help, helis can be frustrating!

MOTOR HELP

Hello. A while ago I got a Shogun V1 from one of my friends and it was ok, but I picked up the V2 last week. My problem is that the Blue EF brushless motor gets very hot and I want to know what would be a good brushless motor for it. I also think it has the 20 Amp EF ESC. I like Castle Creations Speed Controllers myself, but I figure it would be cheaper to get a new motor first and then get a PHX 25 later. My LHS is www.hobbypeople.net

Thanks for any help.

What size pinion are you using on the motor? Chances are if your motor is getting hot, the gearing may be off. It's much cheaper to buy a pinion than a motor or esc (or both). Good luck.

Is the 9 tooth the best for the himaxx 4200kv ? I think its about the same as the EF motor.

When I got the heli from my friend, it came with a 10 tooth pinion on it. The battery that he gave me for the V1 is a Tanic Pack 10-12 C 1550 3C 11.1 volt pack. It's a short pack that fits on the front try of my V2.

Thanks for the help. So how are you guy's mounting the Impulse 2100mAh pack? it's a lot longer than my 1550 Tanic Pack.

I currently have my ESC under my heli.

The pictures in my Gallery is of the Shogun V1 with the Upgrades that I won off ebay. Most of them will go on my V2 once she can fly with any problems.
