Main Discussion > Not impressed with Hayes black fuel tubing......

Changed all my clunk lines on my R50 3 weeks ago to the hayes black fuel tubing that everyone raves about. Per advice on this forum I cut the lines a few mm's short because this line tends to expand over time. About a week later both clunk lines were stuck against the back of the tanks, seems it expanded more than I gave it room for, so I pulled them back out and trimmed them again and put them back in.

I was out flying Sunday with my son, was inverted about 80 feet up when the engine quit (was doing tic tocs, or trying to for that matter). I have never pulled an auto with this machine since I got it 2 years ago. Luckily all the sim practice payed off and I was able to auto down successfully (scared the hell out of me). Upon inspection of the heli the header tank was bone dry and the main tank still had over an inch of fuel in it. The dam clunk line had fell off the main tank nipple because it had expanded so much. This tubing not only expands in length but in the radius also.

I won't be using this tubing for clunk lines anymore unless someone can clue me in on what I did wrong. On the bright side, I now have the confidence to practice autos for real now.

I agree. I don't like the Hayes black tubing for the exact reasons you stated.

I know I will get some flak for this but I use the great planes
fuel tube (nitro of course) it seems to be a very high quality
fuel line. I would like something a little more flexible but
I have never had any problems at all.

I ended up using Dubro medium fuel tubing, I have a spool of it I use for planks. I also changed to a bigger clunk in my main tank, you have put the clunk and tubing in the tank before putting the bung in the tank because the clunk is way to big to fit through the tank bung.

The Hayes link works great except for that one problem with stretching. I'm using Aerotrend fuel line(small diameter clunk line) from Ricks Helis. Doesn't stretch and lasts just as long as the Hayes.

Hmm,

I installed Hayes black clunk line in both of my current glow ships because of all the raving about how good it is and how long it lasts on the forums.

I pulled my Knight .50 off the shelf the other day, and the clunk was against the back of the tank.

I should not come off, because it is tie wrapped on, but I cannot believe how much it has stretched.

I will pull it out and inspect it, and replace it if necessary.

Really makes you wonder what is happening to it chemically in order for it to change dimensions to that degree.

I personally like the Hayes and have never had a problem with it. One thing I do though is cut about 1/8 inch extra peice off it and place it over the fuel tubing where it connects to the nipples. This helps keep it from sliding off. It makes a tighter fit and keeps it from expanding. I have always done this, which is probably why I have never had a problem. It maybe something you want to try.

I've been using the black Hayes for over a year with no problem. I do as DrDan and double-tube it at the nipple(s).

Also, I soak it in fuel for at least a few hours prior to cutting to length. This will also let you see how good it's going to grip the nipples.

Same here, been using it solely for years.. Never experienced a problem, always worked as advertised.. I cut mine roughly 1/8in too short and it just goes and goes.. Clunk lines are about a year old on my R90's No cracking, no splits, but swollen lol.. It did expand

On the advice of a pretty big name in the heli community, I'm using Prather Pink size SMALL on all my clunk lines, my EVO 50, my son's EVO 50, and my YS 91 powered X-spec. Have been doing this now for 5 years. Absolutely no problems what so ever. I do change it out every flying season with new. If you live where you can fly year-round, then change it out more often. I would think you'd get similar service out of the Aerotrend Blue size SMALL also.

I've been using the black hayes, for over 2 years now, I cut it about 1/4" short, and have never hada problem.

I've been flying hayes for years now. I did have it come off once but the tubing was probably six months old. I've noticed like a lot of stuff if it sits out of fuel for a while the nitric acid from the exhaust will eat it up. I always empty the fuel out of the tank after flying and use the pump to suck a bunch of air thru, not really sure if this gets all the exhaust out of the tank or not.

It does expand so I usually cut mine a full 1/4" shorter and don't have to mess with it again. I've had the current line in there since I built the machine 6 months ago with no problems, probably time for a change though. I like it cause it's really flexable and won't come out of the fuel, I don't think it last forever though and should be changes periodically (I like to figure every 10 gallons or 6 months).

I have some of the prather small and it's a tiny 1/16" ID. I was not too confident running this on a 50. The aerotrend small is 3/32" ID and it's what I use.

Helibird,

Interesting that you do this:

"I always empty the fuel out of the tank after flying and use the pump to suck a bunch of air thru, not really sure if this gets all the exhaust out of the tank or not."

I have been filling the tank after the last flight, then draining it again. As it fills up, you can see the exhaust smoke coming out of the muffler.

We are doing two different things to accomplish the same goal!

I also experienced the loose falling off Hayes clunk line. No more for me.

I have been using hayes for years now without an issue, but I also cut it about 1/4" shorter and use a small piece of normal fuel line over it on the nipples to keep it on. That being said, I also have started using the Prather stuff with similar results

I don't like line that expands on a fitting by itself. Out of the question using the stuff.
