Tandem Rotor Helis Vertol Chinook > How the tandem rotors actually achieve counter-rotation?

Hi,

I'm relatively knew to the RC world and I have to say all of the Vertols and Chinooks have really caught my attention. All of your guys' Helis look absolutely amazing!

One thing that gets me though is that obviously a tandem rotor uses two rotors to cancel the torque, but with the IC engines used in the Hirobo models how does one of them actually achieve 'reverse'? Is it possible to buy an engine off-the-shelf to do this or is there some really obvious thing I'm missing here?

Thanks

On the Hirobo Vertol, the front rotor is driven by the engine via a pinion and main gear, standard stuff. At the bottom of the rotor shaft is a large toothed pulley for a belt that runs to the rear rotor. Like the front rotor, there's a pully at the bottom of the shaft to turn the rear rotor. A better way to describe it though, is, think of the rear rotor as a belt driven tail rotor that is mounted vertically instead of horizontally.
