e-E-Flite Blade CP mCX CX 400-3D > DD Tail / Separates Problem - Assistance Please

I just changed from stock receiver and 3-in-1 (glitchy receiver) to a Spektrum AR6100 and E-Flite 10amp ESC (EFLA104) --> fried the DD tail in 20 seconds! Almost a fire! GWS motor had about 16 flights on it, with no heat problems (only warm to the touch).

My full setup is:
1. E-flite Park 370 Brushless Inrunner Motor, 4100Kv EFLM1000 with heat sink
2. E-flite 20-Amp Brushless ESC EFKA311B
3. GWS Tail Motor GW/EDP-50H with heat sink
4. E-flite G90 HH gyro
Added the following items, and was testing:
1. Spektrum AR6100 receiver / DX7 radio
2. E-flite 10-Amp ESC EFLA104

Interestingly, I was playing with the direction of the motor for about 1 to 2 minutes noticing it was controlling in the wrong direction - I did not notice problems with heat, etc.

Switched the servo reversing on the DX7 transmitter, ran up the tail motor to trial and verify direction. I let the FACTORY INSTALLED SMOKE out of the tail motor can!

Other info:
1. polarity of the tail motor is "stock" - red on +ve of black end cap
2. I have verified voltage on both setups:
- Stock receiver and stock 3-in-1 = 11 Volts
- AR6100 receiver and E-flite 10A ESC = 11 Volts

What I am thinking is that perhaps the GWS motor can only handle a certain "duty cycle" running at 11V.

Since the ESC works by pulsing the 11V on and off, perhaps the E-flite 3-in-1 does not pulse as fast as the E-flight 10A ESC (therefore lower duty cycle)...

I am thinking that this GWS motor cannot handle 11V for 100% "on" timing.

1. Has anyone ever put these ESCs on an oscilloscope to compare the pulse widths (and duty cycle)?

2. I am trying to find the website for the specs on the GWS GW/EDP-50H - I know I saw it somewhere, but cannot remember where or find it in my searches...

I've never had a CN12-RXC with a black end cap - Only grey
Buy the EDP-50XC to make sure you get the CN12-RXC motor
I've only used the stock 3-in-1 and a GWS ESC with them - DS mode with the GWS

Or just go brushless
I have over 150 flights (almost 20 hours) on mine so far without even a hiccup

Micro-Maniac:

Thanks for the links!

I'll buy an EDP-50XC from my LHS tomorrow and try it.

The link for omnimodels sent me to an EDP-50/H. Is this the same motor?

If I still have problems with the EDP-50XC, I'll try another manufacturer's ESC to see if the E-flite ESC is not compatible with the GWS motor for some reason...

What ESC controllers are other people using on their DD tails?

I mainly linked omnimodels for the decent pic of a CN12-RXC motor which is what your EDP-50/H should have been - The EDP-50/H & XC should be the same but I more trust an EDP-50XC in original package to be a CN12-RXC Plus it comes with the 3020 props I use

People have used all kinds of ESCs but I think the majority use GWS ICS-50s 100s or 300s - I used a 300 because I had it on hand

Have you been able to solve your DD tail problem that you had?

Or are you still back to the stock tail?

I'm back to the stock tail, well over 50 flights and not a single problem....I've gotten more stick time and had more fun in the last 10 days than the whole month and a half I was messin with the DD,it held great but I couldn't get one to last and was CONSTANTLY tinkering....whats really weird is the stock set up is BARELY warm after a 10 min flight, swap in a DD and its SCORCHING after 2-3 min of gentle hovering

Micro-maniac:

Although my motor looks to be the same size, it has vent holes on the side and a black end cap - nothing like the link you sent me. See photo below.

I just checked the original package that I purchased it in, below. Definitely says GW/EDP-50/H.

Wonder what I actually bought...

Wonder why a separate ESC caused it to fry...

Hmmm...

tutelar-rc, Man OH Man. I have the black cap(with side vents), have had the grey cap before(very good in regard to pressing the prop on there, fragile but, do-able) and it is about the same(using the 4530 prop adapter kit, sure do like that). Right now I just recently have put the G90 on my BCPP. I am running the stock main(just replaced....amazing..... from the original that had way to many hours by the way). I am using the stock 3 in 1 with GWS DD(obviously) with the 3020(0320 yeah, I know, whatever). So the wag starts a 3 o'clock but, it is certainly not locked(but very close). I'm not really hovering(other that to take a look before I flip the idle up to make sure all looks squared) I am waiting for the ICS50E. I will let you know how that works. I did break my motor in reverse polarity, stock motor orientation, numbers on prop facing the tail boom and, it does work very good(at the 2 hrs on tail mark). I hope everything works out for you.

PS I hope to email Chen at GWS when the tail is at 10 hours still rockin'.

Dear God, please let it set down just as it took off. Amen.

tutelar rc and others.

I currently am running the black
end cap DD motor. It has the vents
in the can. I,m using a GWS motor
mount, which puts the prop on the
left side of the boom (Pilots side).
My motor is wired in reverse,so the
prop wash flows over the motor. Some
call this "Tractor Mode", Where when
right rudder is applied, it Pulls the
Tail to the left. I had this same set
up with the Grey end cap motor also,
which I replaced about 10 days ago and
many pacs ago. Both motors where slightly
warm after 7 min. of hovering and FF.
I am using the 3020 push on prop also
with a 3n1 G90 and stock TX and RX and
8T brushed main motor.

I had the same results when I was running the stock 3-in-1.

Fried the motor when I went to a separate ESC...
