I'm wondering how many folks here have one of the HDX 450s from HeliDirect or some other source? Do you think it warrants its own Forum? There are several different versions of this kit and I think it would be helpfull if this Heli had it's place amongst the other Manufacturers threads!

Thanks,
Phaseman

isnt an HDX 450 basically a Trex450 clone? Or is it the other way around?

TREX Clone

Yes, you are correct! With a few differences. The HDX has been sold with 3 or 4 versions of 3 different frames I believe, so they have some issues that are particular to them when it comes to assembly or repair.

Do I detect a small amount of bias in that last post?

Seriously, I just received my kit with the F style frame and am HUGELY excited to get started on it!

Assembly

Hey Misskimo,
Did you find that you had to grind away the frame a bit where the tabs on the aluminum shaft mounts met the frame?

Thanks,

everything fit like a glove , didnt even use instructions , didnt down load them. I did have a little tic tic in the tail gearbox , slapped a new tail boom and all off my half trex & heli max , looked just like it , and smooth as silk now , hope to try it out as soon as the weather gets good

Almost done!

I'll get some pics up Monday...

Turns out I only had that problem with the tabs on the main shaft supports. Everything else DID fit like a glove. Let me know when you take yours up for the first time Misskimo, I can't wait to hear how she flys!

Thanks,

Ok, I have a question for you HDX guys. Probably obvious to everyone else but I'm a newb. Following the manual for assembly, it stated that when looking down from the tail in position that if you spin the tail belt drive gear clockwise that the tail rotor should spin counter clockwise when viewed tail head on from the right side.

That was fine... However!
I had mounted the tail blades in the direction shown on the instruction manual illustration. There were no written instructions on mounting these rear blades. The illustration also made sense to me as the counter clockwise rotation made sense with the illustrated direction of the blades.

once I got to mounting the rotor head and gears I noticed that when spinning the main gear in the drive direction the tail rotor blades spin clockwise, which made me believe that the tail rotor blades must be installed in the wrong direction, so I switched them. The tail blades now rotate leading edge forward or clocwise when the main gear is turned in the drive direction ( clockwise ),

Does all this make sense to anyone or have I made it too complex? Does it sound like I have it right?

Thanks,
Phaseman

you want the forward tail rotor blade to be turning such that it is advancing in the direction of the rotor wash. ie make sure the tail rotor is turning counter-clockwise if it is on the starboard (right looking from back to front) side of the heli. likewise, you want the tail rotor to be turnign clockwise if mounted on the port (left looking from back to front) side of the heli.

this is done so that the advancing tail blade will see maximum airspeed over its surface. if it were done the other way, your tail wouldnt have nearly as much authority.

FYI, that helo you have is a trex clone other than the frame. most of the mechanics and parts operate in the same manner as a T450

Thanks Umdpru!

Just so I have this straight in my head...

So... Looking down with the tail out, if I spin the main rotor clockwise by hand, the tail rotor should engage and spin CCW as seen from the right side?

Next question, if that is not the direction the tail is spinning do I just flip the belt over at the belt gear at the rear of the frame ( without twisting the belt on itself of course.)?

Thanks,
Phaseman

1) Yes the TR should be turning CCW.

2) impart a twist in the belt 1/4 turn in the other direction. make sure that the belt only has 1/4 twist in it otherwise youll be starting a thread about belt breakage...

Thanks again Umdpru.

That straightens me... and my Heli out! And yes, I did notice during the install that a 1/4 twist too far and the belt started binding.

PHASEMAN , I do like this FSE frame , but you are limited to the size of battery you can use? I am using the ENERLAND 3s1p 2100mah 20C batteries and I just got me another battery, but this one is the 3s1p 2150mah 20C and it is too thick to fit in the frame!!
Any battery thicker than 15/16 of an inch and it will not fit!!

Interesting about the battery size issue... I noticed however that the front cross members in the FSE frame can be removed even after assembly fairly easily by gently flexing the frame. I wonder if you could remove the top or bottom frame peice, make some sort of spacers to fill in any slop on the sides of your larger batteries and use the battery iself for frame support? They do something like that with some motorcycles, use the engine as part of the frame.

Thanks,
Phaseman
