Why is there such a mental block from the simulator to applying them at the field? I can fly figure eights on the sim, but don't have the nerve at the field. The learning curve, compared to planes, is huge. I guess I just have to be patient and go at this slow pace. Any suggestions

Thanks,
Dave

Its because at the field you have to pay for a mistake. On the sim you just click a button. That's understandable. It still happens to me and I've been flying for 13 years. When your at the field just think of it as the same as being on the sim. And keep it as high as possible so you will have time to recover from a mistake. I just think to myself, if its gonna crash its gonna crash. So what. I cant enjoy it if I'm too worried to fly it. And as you said, be patient and do a little at a time until your confidence grows.

You'll get used to it. It's like anything else. At first I was a little nerveous. Then in a couple of days you get used to it and you get comfortable flying all over.

Nerves

It is important that you go at your own pace, but there will come a time when you will just have to hit the throttle and go. I remember that fear very well. After my first circuit in forward flight, I was a nervous wreck. I had to bring the heli down to calm myself before I took off again.
It does get easier, but you have to keep at it. If you are comfortable on the SIM, then you should do ok at the field.
BTW... don't forget to practive nose in hovering. That will be a life saver later.

Thanks

Man do I know how you feel. I can fly circuits and nose-in on my sim, but at the field its another story. I get so nervous trying figure 8's at the field. Something that did help me though, I practiced a couple of hours on the sim while listening to my Creed cd and Sunday while flying I had a particular song in my head. It helped me relax and fly better
