Safety - RC Helis are not toys > The facts of what happened with pet Macaw hitting T-Rex 450SE

To avoid any speculation and rumor about a pet Macaw hitting a T-Rex 450SE, here's the facts since it has generated interest so quickly from this thread in less than 24 hours from when it occurred (kind of shocking to me).

First see http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t351011p1/ for background.

First of all, the owner of the bird occasionally brings her pet macaw to the state/AMA sanctioned model airplane field and lets it fly. I don't know the legality of this but I personally do not believe it is safe.

Anyhow, my friend (who is an excellent 3D pilot) was flying his T-Rex 450SE in the helicopter area. When I started my helicopter from the pit area to go to the flying area, I asked the owner of the bird whether or not it was safe for the bird since I saw it near my friend and I was going to go up with a bigger heli. She replied by saying that the bird was ok (I guess it had always avoided the models in the past).

Just about 15 seconds after I asked her, the bird went flying into the 450SE, got hit, and flew towards the mountains.

We (the pilots) felt very bad for the bird but we know it was not our fault. The T-Rex 450 broke of course. As for the cost of fixing the helicopter, my friend was nice enough to not pursue it.

I sometimes wonder if owners should get IQ tested before they are allowed to own a pet. I mean, come on..... How dumb to you have to be to let a pet bird fly around model aircraft.

You can't hear me because I am just sitting here in shock, shaking my head at the screen.

Pets are not predictable and R/C pilots are very focused (why we fly with spotters). Bad combination. Both sides seem to have different takes on who initiated it (bird flew into heli vs. heli flew up into bird). Either way, bad idea to have both in the same airspace.

I don't imagine the bird owner will permit her bird to fly loose near R/C aircraft nor will the pilot fly while valuable pet birds are in the air near the model.

Just an unfortunate accident.

Another incident when a bird was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think a lesson learned from this is to never ask someone who is around a field which is designated for model aircraft whether or not they feel it is safe, but to inform them that it is not and they are there at their own risk. At the field I fly at, we take it a step further by informing people who try and use our field while we are flying to leave and if they refuse, we threaten to call the police. A lot of people genuinely don't understand how dangerous these are.

The video is a bad example, that bird was clearly committing suicide.

As for the mccaw bird or whatever .... why not fly it at the local park or something, "Hmmm ... there's alot of open space at the shooting range, let's go flying, Tweety!"

I do not know much about pet birds. I did not know that you could just let them fly around and expect them to come back. I always thought that they would just fly away.

It's never suggested that pet birds, especially parrots, be allowed to fly. There are many reasons, such as this, that show that it's potentially dangerous to let the bird roam free. It's easy to clip the primary flight feathers, and they even sell little leashes that keep the bird attached to you. If your bird can fly, use a leash.

Birds vs RC Heli don't Mix

I see that lady that flys her pet bird (Parrot)out there every once in awhile and wonder what she's thinking about to allow her bird to fly in an area around RC planes and RC helis that use fuel motors that run around 2000 RPMs. Since this location is open to spectators and guess, I think she feels its also her right to fly what ever she has in the same location since the park is owned by the state. You gotta know this was coming sooner or later. Better an electric heli than a Gas one. Hope the birds OK.

I too have pet birds (two now, a third when my mom is incapable of safely taking care of hers) and am very careful when around models with my birds. Anyway, check my post.

AMA Field

This field is a AMA sanctioned field approved for RC model aircrafts, not birds. I'am sure the pilot did not intentionally hit the bird but accidents happen. Why anyone would allow a pet bird to fly freely around a field approved by the state for RC model aircrafts is beyond me. Out of all the fields and recreational parks in Hawaii (Oahu)go figure. The pilot should contact AMA for compensation of his Trex 450SE. Why do we pay for insurance each year if we don't take advanatage of the insurance policy mostly since this happened on a AMA sanctioned field.

The bird owner should be responsible for ALL damages to the Trex. There is no way that bird should have been allowed to fly there. She is totally liable.

jefferydc,
You are right. The bird should not have been allowed to fly there.
Dumb thing for the owner to do.
The field should not have allowed it. But they did, therefore accepting responsibility.
Dumb thing for them to do.

Ben

P.S. How can a simple day of flying get so complicated?

Well you need to look at the club rules concerning that field. At OUR field we do not allow any pets plain and simple. We used to allow pets but one member would show up and bring his dog and it would chase the planks down the runway snapping at the tail feathers and would try to bite the helis. Seen more then one plane get totaled due to this dog. This dog even put a paw through one of mine on its wing sitting in the pits. Now if there are no rules concerning the allowance of pets then the person who owned the bird and anyone who didnt tell this pet owner that to have the bird flying around are at fault. I dont like to see or hear of any animal getting hurt including birds and I am not a bird fan but this lady does not deserve to have a pet of any kind as far as I am concerned. To me in my opinion she is liable for any costs if the owner of the heli went after her (in my opinion from what I gathered here he didnt mind the bird so he has no legal ground to stand on) she should also never be allowed to own a pet again just to put it in another situation like this again. Hope everything works out for all but man that women is wacked for bringing her pet bird to a rc field and anyone that didnt try and stop her from flying it there around the helis is just as much at fault and nuts as her. I wouldnt of taken my heli up as long as the situation was unsafe due to this bird.
