Tell you what, I'd love to see you apparent "see and avoiders" put to the test. If someone were to flash cards at you with numbers the size of a bird in your field of vision I almost gaurantee you couldn't identify the numbers and you wouldn't even have to think about avoiding them.

I too own a blue and gold macaw along with a few other large parrots and can tell you that none of my birds are allowed to go outside without there wings clipped. I hand fed all my birds so there really docile and talk up a storm but I never ever let them free flight. The reason that blue and gold got hit by whatever is the owners fault. I feel sorry for the bird. The owner should know better. Anyone who lets there bird fly at a funfly is irrisponsible and very stupid. It angers me that someone can be such a bird brain "no pun intended" to let his bird roam free where helicopters and planes are all around. Its like letting your dog out on the freeway, sooner or later he is going to get hit by a car. Jimmi

You are right! you are absolutely right

I would know that a card was flashed in front of me and I still would not hit it with my heli. Knowing the number is totally irrelevant, know what the number is has nothing to do with seeing and avoiding.

See and avoid.

While interviewing Jackie Stewart in 1967 before the indy 500,I had the oppertunity to ride around the track with him while he commented on how he would be driving.
A safety truck pulled out in front of us and Mr Stewart quickly swerved and avoided it. I commented that the truck had almost hit us. His comment "What truck?"

Im pretty sure that the pilot of the Trex450SE was not sitting in the cockpit flying it when suddenly a Macaw flies in front of his flight path. Nope! The macaw flew into the heli's flightpath from outside of the field of vision of the pilot.

Perhaps, but not very practical advice for many lesser pilots (myself included, apparently). I've been at this for more than 3 years with 52 hours (384 flights) of actual, logged flight time. It's nice to think that someday (perhaps after several hundred hours of actual flight time?) I may be skillfull enough to be able to "see and avoid" without relying on an observer.

umdpru,
I say again:
What the owner did was wrong.Period.
What the safty officer did was wrong.
If he did not have the personal experience to know if it was safe or not, he should have erred on the side of safty and not allowed it.

This happened at an AMA field.
Was the bird owner an ama member?
You need to be to "fly" there.
Of course if she was she would have known better than do what she did.
Did the safety officer inspect what she was going to fly and declare it safe to fly. That is his job.
Did the safety officer determine if she had the skils to safely fly the "bird'? He should have.

I agree, the owner of the bird's, piloting skills should be called into question.

My point is you wouldn't have to avoid the card. Another example, if someone were firing rubber discs at your heli you would not avoid them, lets someone have a go if you really belive you could do it. There would be too much information to interpret in the split second you saw it flying towards you. Like is it going to travel in front or behind the heli, above or below tatsa iem that adheres to the laws of physics that can not change its direction spontaneously.

For frigs sake he is looking out of the cockpit. If he were stood on the ground flying an RC jumbo it may be a little different. I know how few bird strikes occur in military jets as I work for a company that builds, repairs, maintains and flies military jets all day every day. There is very rarely an incident, but as I said its different having the machine as a part of you and being remote to the machine.

we're talking about RC Helicopters, not full size A/C with pilots sitting in cockpits, ofcourse its easier to "see and avoid" in that scenario.

I took at look at all the photos of you flying in your gallery. You weren't looking around in any of them.

MasterCrash,
The thugs in black are not who you should worry about.
The parrot is recovering, the heli was destroyed.
