Crashed? Discussion and Photos > My T-Rex just ate a Bird

Today was intersting, I went to my usual flying local and took off. My first two batteries were uneventful flights and for the third I opened up my circuts to take full advantage of the field. I noticed a bird started to give chase after passing the trees on the far end. I just stuck to my pattern because I am nose in and I don't want to stop while so far away in that position. I bumped up the collective and pitched the nose over some more and came back about as fast as it would go. I bleed off some speed in the turn and went back to the far end but was making my circuts much smaller as before, so as not to piss off birdy. It didn't work as soon as I was remotely in the area it came at Rex from above and flew straight into the rotor. I saw feathers fly the bird shoot off then fall like a rock, the helicopter started to tumble and I hit the throttle hold and watched it fall from about 30 feet. I broke a skid, the tail fin and a blade grip and bent the flybar, thats it. Every thing else is fine. The bird was about 50 feet from the T-rex and not moving. Killed it cold. Not gruesome like I would expect. No blood, just a dead bird, and a crippled T-Rex. I was really cool but I feel bad for it.

At 30ft high thats all the damage you had??? Not bad. POOR bird though. Just goes to show anything can and will happen at anytime. Its up to us ( the pilot) to make sure our airspace is safe.

We have a hawk at our field that everytime I go up and he is in the air we all keep a very close eye on where he is and what he is doing.

Sorry about your incident.

I get the odd fly and bumble bee in my rotors, you hear a slight crack (sortof) noise. there is a little bit of bee guts on my blades after but no sign of the bee anywhere (had it in main and tail rotors). A bird though, maybe a 90 could deal with a small one... I doubt it though...

All just part of the game. The sad part is that it was probably trying to protect its young but instead, left them to die.

I'm sure there's a retailer out there that sells spare parts to get that bird looking like new... as for your helicopter, thank goodness Trex parts are cheap

Hahaha, it sounds like the bird disliked the trex being occupied its territory. Poorly bird, and lucky you with a minor crash.

My slow flight airplane got attacked by a bird once while I flew it in the back of the school yard. All I could see was feather flying behind the prop, but the bird flew away. I landed my airplane safely after that.

The other time was dancing with a bird in the air with the same airplane. Whatever I did (pitch, roll, dive, etc.), the bird followed my airplane for at least two mins.

Well, I am off the topic of the heli world, but just want to share my stories.
