thinking of doing the hdx 300 brushless motor on my blade cp pro. Anyone running this? This is my toy heli for the back yard so I'm trying to stay cheap and avoice 50 bucks for an eflite motor. I saw one review said that it vibrated the heck out of the heli? Anyone have good experiences?

i really like this outrunner motor, gobs of power and it runs really cool. great buy for me, id also suggest looking at the esky brushless setup, (esc and motor) and i think the esky stuff is cheaper,(but good quality) about 50 bones. my hdx300 motor and sonix esc was about 59 bucks heres a pics for clicks.

notice the motor is shorter than the servo, dont be fooled by size.

I wish I was good at this

This is my preference.

ARC110 with Phoenix CC10 and dealing with LightFlight is a pleasure.

The ARC110 is smooth, doesn't get hot, nice set up. I have a 9 tooth pinion and a 10, I'm using the 10.

The ARC110 does have high cogging, which I understand to mean that it doesn't rotate by hand freely when no power is applied. This isn't an issue for me since I have MicroHeli oneway hub and gear.

I like it. Good luch with whatever you decide.

Robl45,
I forgot to ask what tail configuration are you using?

well my tail was stock, I am putting on the direct drive tail, I have the motor with 3020 prop and ics50 esc. I also have a brushless esc from RC Expert that I never used so I will try that for now.

What size main gear is on the blade cp pro? And What type pinions does it take? Are they .5 mod? i'm guessing 11tooth pinion is probably too big for this heli? asking because I already have those for the trex.

Rob,
Depending on what you want out of this build, and expecting you like the capabilities of the trex tail, you will almost be satisfied with the GWS DD tail and Esc. The brushless tail, from the posts I read on RCGroups tends to be too slow to respond. The stock tail will not keep up with the brushless main motor, but you know that already.

If you want the "dialed in tail of a trex" the freestyle belted upgrade is the way to go. I haven't purchased this yet, but a few others have and are very pleased with the performance and durability. My hesitation on this purchase is more to do with how stable this heli is overall. I'm not the best pilot, but I'm learning fast.

Pinion is .5 mod and I don't know the gear size, I don't ever recall seeing that there has ever been an alternative to purchase.

gear size I want to know so I can calculate headspped.

This is my toy heli, the trex 600 will be my main heli but it won't fly in the yard so I just want something somewhat capable that I can play with in my backyard.

Hence just trying to find a cheap motor to use. I think the hdx300 is it, even comes with a free pinion. 30 dollars shipped to my door is not a bad deal.

I think you will be happy with that motor. I've been using it for about 6 months in my CPP. It is my backyard toy too. As such, it gets a lot more flight time than my T-Rex. I wish I had bought it sooner because I have over a hundred dollars in dead main motors.

The CPP main gear has 140 teeth and I use the Align 9 tooth pinion. This gear combo makes some noise until it's broken in but then runs smooth for a long time. I'm still on my first pinion.

Anyway, it was the first upgrade I did and the stock tail worked OK if I was careful. It wasn't like I couldn't fly the thing but I'm not doing inverted stuff or flips. Besides, I wanted a challenge so I didn't mind the schizo tail so much.

I eventually went full seperates with a G90/ICS100/DD and NOW we're talkin'! It's not as good as my T-Rex but close enough for my back yard and has really made my blade a lot of fun.

I'm very, very happy with mine and am sure you will enjoy yours.

Edit: Changed Main gear tooth count.

robl45,

I have used both the HDX300 and the ARC110.

I first started with the HDX motor and was amazed how much power such a little motor could produce. It stays cool because it is an outrunner, but you have to make sure nothing will touch the top part of the spinning can. An 8t with this motor is good, using a 9t has wicked fast headspeed. My only complaint about this motor is mine was never really that efficient. I got at best 89 mah/ minute.

The ARC110 is what I am currently using. This motor gets warm, but not hot. It is a 110w motor rated at 3100kv. I have a 10t pinion on it and I am getting 65-70mah/ minute. My headspeed is plenty high, so I am going to try a 9t to see if that helps efficiency a little more. This motor does have heavy cogging, but runs really smooth when it gets going.

Both motors are good buys. I like the ARC110 a little more because of the efficiency factor. I fly with the stock gyro and DD tail. DD or dual tail is a necessity with a BL main. Oh, I'm fairly sure that the CP main gear is 140t.

bpd282 - I verified the tooth count and corrected my post.

Also, Thanks for the efficiency info, did you see much power difference between the two?

There is a little power difference between the two, but that is due to one being 3100kv (ARC110) and 3800kv (HDX). I would say that the ARC110 and a 10t has just a bit more headspeed than the HDX and the 8t did. My batteries also seem a little cooler after flight with the ARC also.

according to my headspeed calculator, 9teeth on the hdx300 would be 2400 or so rpm's. This is wicked fast? My trex is using the old 420L motor and doing 2700 rpms and most guys are running the 430L motor pushing 3000 rpms.

It would seem the hdx300 needs a 10 tooth.

I could not imagine how fast the HDX motor would be on a 10t pinion. I had to dail down my throttle curve using the 9t so the head would not explode.

I don't think you can really compare head components between the CP and REX. My Rexy 450SE can take a HS of 3000, but look at how much bigger and better the head is designed. When saying the HS on the HDX was wicked fast, I was referring to the capabilities/characteristics of the CP only.

Please let us know how your HDX and 10t goes.

nah, I will try 9 teeth. I absolutely agree with you that the head design certainly is not as strong, thats what I was trying to figure out as it didn't seem fast just on paper. The little mini zoom I have spins at around 4000. Thats crazy. And people fly them in the house. Mine I think will go for sale soon. Thats just not super safe to me.

Hey Guys:

I have just put this motor (HDX300) on my Blade with a Castle 10 ESC.

I have two problems and could really use some help/advice.

1. The thing vibrates like heck.

2. When I throttle up, everything is cutting off. If I cut the throttle and come backup it restarts again. Not sure if it's the ESC or something else. I have a good 950mah 11.1 volt battery, fully charged. Wired things up like showin the Blade manual.

I've tried adjusting the throttle channel end points, but it doesn't seem to matter.

Anyone know what's up?

Thanks,
Lee

Mine has always been very smooth. I would try taking the pinion off the motor and spinning it up to see if it still vibrates. Also, with the higher head speed any imbalance in the head will be magnified. I find it hard to believe the motor vibrates too badly to use unless it has been damaged. If it is the motor, I would try for a replacement.

Not sure about the cutoff issue. Which ESC are you using? I'm using the Sonix 18 amp and it has worked flawless since I installed it. With the Sonix ESC, to set the throttle range, you raise the throttle fully then plug in the battery on the helicopter. When you hear two quick beeps, lower it and the throttle range is set.

Hope this helps...

Andy

The motor is brand new.

I'm doing a complete rebuild on the head and shaft, just to be on the safe side. I'll check the motor by itself tonight.

I'm using a Castle Phoenix 10. I need to tweak some of the settings I believe. It's on the limit, but I'm trying to keep it light. I have a 25 as well.

Thanks,
Lee

Please post how this works out for you because I've been wanting to get a Phoenix 10 for the light weight as well.

Good luck,
Andy
