I have come to the conclusion a long time ago that ALL model starters do a miserable job on larger engines with only 12V.

As My Torq Master 90 will attest, 18 volts does a fine job and does not destroy the starter.

The problem is the torque required to get a larger engine turning. Not enough voltage and too much torque required and the motor stalls and pulls all the amps the battery can deliver and just makes heat in the motor, brushes, switch and wires.

18 volts gets things turning nicely.

Ok, I know I let this go a while. I just thought I'd chime in and post the results of "trying again" with the TorqMaster 180 starter on my OS .90. I had told Nitrohuffer that I'd check out the switch & brushes on the starter as I had not looked into those items as a possible cause of the lack in performance on my 180. Today I finally had a chance to play around with it. I fully charged the two 7 cell 1700 mAh Nicd packs that I last tried with the starter. I tried to crank the .90 with it just as a "control" for todays experiments. Id did crank it a couple of times but very slowly and only turned it over maybe 3 or 4 times. I actually held the switch on even with the starter stalled. At that time I noticed the connections (between the cells) on one of the pre-assembled "stick" packs started to heat up and even "glow" a little! This caused me to look into the packs more. I pulled the one pack apart and re-assembled it soldering on my own wires to re-assemble it. When I tried it again on the .90 it still wouldn't turn it over but I noticed this time the whole pack (the one I put back together) got a little warm and the other pack did not. Next I decided to just replace the "bum" pack with a 3000 mAh NiMh 7 cell (I had to assemble this one from loose cells) I can't believe the performance of this starter using this "new" pack combined with one of the old 1700mAh NiCd packs! This TorqMaster 180 is spinning my OS .90 at a great RPM NO PROBLEM! I'll likely now make another 3000mAh NiMh pack to match the one I made today.
I'd like to thank Nitrohuffer for "making" me take another look at this starter. I'm now VERY happy with the performance of this starter. I can't believe that nothing I previously tried to power this starter with worked. I have to admit that I was previously wrong about the performance of the TorqMaster 180 starter. I bought it because it was a good value, and I now see that it does what it is advertised to do. I look forward to using this starter instead of the drill I have been using. I can now leave the drill in the van where it belongs! Thanks again Nitro!

Thanks for all the info guys. I decided to go with a dynatron and the makita battery/ bracket from finer edge. I have the bracket now, and I am just waiting on the battery.

I'm surprised that there isn't a gear reduction starter system that hasn't taken "Top Dog" spot in the Starter Dept. Why? I know that there are some available, but why haven't they taken over?

I am surprised too.

I have tried geared starters, specifically the pacific aeromodels one. I also have had Kavan Starters, and those are the best, in my opinion. I mostly fly planks though.

Right now, I have a dynatron with the Finer Edge Lipo adapter.

But that little Kavan will give it a run for it's money.

I may not be able to turn a kit into a plane, but I can turn a plane into a kit...

I have a 24v Drill battery pack (NiCad) that I just wired a deans connector on to. I can still charge it in the supplied charger too. I had been using the drill but the keyless chuck kept working loose due to the drill running in reverse. I am getting a new (cheap) starter tomorrow so hopefully it can handle the 24v. Time will tell...

Yuk $$$$$ lousy performance More $$$$ maybe OK now?

Just buy a 50 dollar rechargable drill and through it in reverse,
Keep it in after starting for 3 seconds to prevent motor running in reverse, Damn, those heli starters need to be gear reduced and even if some are, none of them need to cost so damn much

I wont part with my Milwalki no matter what they say.

For a time I used a 110 volt inverter from a car battery and a 20 dollar drill, till I saw the Cordless drill had a clutch on it, removing the hazard of Hydrolock crankshaft breakage.

Starts the whole Heli Club's motors including an OS90 every time, battery lasts all day.

Torqmaster 90 - $28

Start shaft with a one way bearing if needed and hook it up to 16-18 volts and it works great, even for 90 size.

I used my setup all last weekend. 14.4V and it lasted all weeekend without needing to be recharged! It was able to start the .90 all weekend too. I'm a happy camper with the TorqMaster 180 & 14 NiMh sub C cells. Thanks everyone!

Still using mine with no issues. It lasted the entire Jax Gathering(Fri-Sun) starting my EVO50, wingswest328's Trex600N (Dynatron w/$75 starter shaft-just having shaft issues), and another gentlemen's Trex600N who's starter died(Hobbico 90 w/Powercore 12v battery).

This setup is awesome. especially if your on a budget and don't feel like spending more for a starter than the helicopter it's starting. LOL
