some people dont understand that if somthing goes wrong mechanical (he says that that was the first flight on that heli.) it can kill you.

then again, we don't know if he'd tried spooling it up in the past, or if he had someone else look over the heli for him... I don't really see what he did wrong here... Alan Szabo does insane 3d only a few feet from where he stands, so aside from him performing preflight inspections on his helis, what makes him any different from any other pilot when it comes to mechanical failure?...

make sure that you look over your heli before flying it... do it as much as you can... everyday when you start flying, between flights even... the more you do it, the better.

Agree. the 3D guys are the not the safest bunch to fly near, they push those helicopters pretty hard, and they fly within a couple of feet of themselfves and people.

-= I know there is Money in RC helicopters. I put it there=-

I have seen alan Szabo fly and have been out there close to him it did seem like if he had a failure on the helicopter he could have had serrious problems. I believe it was jason crouse that was doing inverted tailfirst circles around and just as it came around and started to head away from the croud he had a boom strike and it went right in. if he had the boom strike two secconds sooner he could have killed someone, including me.

nothing, it is never completly safe to fly that close to people.

but man is it FUN to watch!

but to minimize the potential for injury, the best thing to do is to preflight your heli regularly and to practice flying so that you can comfortably control the helicopter to keep it away from you and the crowd... simple as that. a simulator is every bit as important in regards to safety as a barrier net simply because it helps the pilot hone his skills.

Szabo and Krause are professional pilots...With that said, this guy is no Szabo or Krause! He was no rookie but not an expert either AND the heli didn't look totally dialed in. It looked like he was correcting it and that the heli wanted to constantly pitch backwards. Yes, he did hover pretty close to himself but what made me worry even more was that he was almost directly below his flight pattern. At some points, it looked like the heli was headed straight for him when it was in a dive. IMO, it was unsafe and I would never fly that close to myself. A thorough pre-flight check WILL minimize mechanical failure but WILL NOT cover every unforseen mechanical failure. Belts snap and parts break and if they are all predictable and avoidable via a pre-flight check, then we wouldn't see any crashes due to mechanical failure, would we?...but we do. One other thing, he was an awfully big target for that heli. Not to flame the pilot for his size but his size sure would increase the likelyhood of getting hit by his heli in the event of a mechanical failure.

I agree on that but we are human's and human's make mistakes, and not to mention the machine because the fail sometimes, radio, mechanical, etc. This hobby it's not totally safe, so even the best pilots have bad days, the responsability is for all type of pilots and style of fliying.

I'm charging batteries....

I don't see many people near him, he's not risking the lives of others. Don't see anything wrong with it, if he killed himself with it then that's his choice really.

Can't tell how close he was with a camera from that angle anyway.

Even though the Szabo brothers and Jason are professional pilots, it doesn't mean that their helis are unbreakable. Everybody knows that there's a possibility for something to go wrong during the flight. So even if you're the best pilot in the world you should take care of your own and the other's safety. I know that there are many replys like mine, but I still want to remind you . My heli (r50) had a boomstrike during pirotictos, and it just exploded in the air. It's just pure luck that the flying parts go by you! If you wanna fly close to yourself, don't risk others. So be safe and fly like never before!

Do you know what happened in this video?

It doesn't look like the blades hit the ground?

Do you guys really thing because someone is a "pro" pilot that it makes them any safer than anyone else. I'd say the opposite is true in many cases.
Many seem to think their poo poo stinks alot less than the rest of us so it is ok for them to do stupid things.

Was it not the great Krause himself who just a few years back hit himself and then started preaching the virtues of flying out a bit farther and being safe?

The sad part is most people will only learn the hard way.

The worst pilots in my mind are the guys that are just starting out, and those with alot of flight time that think they are somehow above something going wrong.

Bwhahahahaha

On the subject of pros and safety, someone really needs to knock some sense into some of them, its if anything unprofessional how most of them fly.
