Our days of pulling this bonehead maneuver are over. I found this device on the web. Gave it a try and it works great. I could not believe how many times I check my switches before I started. When you learn to trust it starting is not as stressful.

It's nice but most of the hot starts I have seen have been caused by not turning on the heli electronics. In that case this would do nothing for you.

Everyone should get into the habit of starting the heli with the throttle hold (autorotation) switch on.

Same thing, doesn’t do any good if the electronics are not on.

I admit it. I’ve had a hot start and I have also started the heli without turning on the electrics. Because I have an onboard generator it wasn’t apparent that I never turn on the receiver. I almost flew it this way but I stopped to check something else and noticed I never turn on the switch.

Now every time I start my heli I run the collective all the way up and all the way down before I pull the cord. That tells me I have everything on and the throttle is all the way down. Never had a close call since. If you can force yourself to learn this habit I doubt if you will ever have a hot start again. It takes two seconds.

Usually the laps of memory occurs when you are in the middle of your start up procedure and someone asks you a dumb question like “How high will it go?”

The safest solution that I have ever used was an on-board glow . If the throttle isn't set at tickover , the plug doesn't glow .

At the end of the day , it gets dark .

To paraphrase Mel Brooks from the History of the World Part II:

Procedure Procedure Procedure...

And yes an interruption in my procedure forces me to start the procedure over from step 1.

I had one guy asking questions and interrupting so often, that I kept starting the procedure over. Of course after about 3 or 4 interruptions the 5th was: How come you keep starting over? (Duh)

I have had too many hot starts in my life, and incorrectly set governors, so I try to be very careful now.

Gassers start with just a pull and most people don't like to rely on any kind of a kill switch.

That does not work for everyone since my Hyper has to have a little more throttle than idle.

Really, people just need to have a procedure and never break it.
TX: on
RX: on
Check throws: correct and free
Curve: normal
Throttle: Set for start
Fuel cutoff: disabled
Glow heat: Applied
Starter: Engaged

But if TH works for you, then it is your procedure...But you could be in V2 and have TH on....So I like a step by step program.

At least with electrics the eSC will not arm unless it sees 0 throttle.

You have the other problem with electrics, you don't know when they are off. Some have been known to take off on their own. I have seen it happen with planks. Some people disconnect the battery and don't rely on a switch.

In the end, its best to just hold on tight and be ready to pull the fuel line. It happened to me once or twice, but not a real big deal as long as you can shut her down quick. And like most mistakes, you learn to not make them.

Ya that would stop the engine faster, but the way I start the Raptor, Id have to reach over to the other side to pinch the exhaust.

I am left handed and start on the opposite side, I can get to the muffler easy and close it off. I just drop the starter.

3-4 seconds max

My first of the day pre-flight looks like I have OCD, I won't even go into it, but I try to make my own luck!

I always have a good hold on the grip when starting. I was taught that way, And always start the heli with the fuel inlet facing you. I had a hot start once and went for the exhaust tip. The rubber blew off the muffler, I was left holding the tip in my hand, and still had a good hold of the grip with the other. I have since put a short zip tie on the fuel line to make it easier to grab and pull off. I also fastened my exhaust extension better.

It's a good day for a guinness!!!

yet another piece of electronics to possibly fail in my opinion.. but great concept and wonderful price... wouldn't have stopped my hot start.. .I had the 9C on the wrong model for the first time in 5 years!!! So throttle hold wouldn't have helped either!
It's okay though cuz it only cost me $100 in damage to the tail after it swung around at 90 miles an hour and struck my 30 pound field box. Boy the O.S. .61 has some torque at 100% throttle!

Believer in Weston motors!

Good grip + checking the actual position of the Throttle servo. One time forgot to reattach linkage - Yes I know it is stupid ;o)

Yeah, another nice thing about a gasser. It can't develope torque until it gets up to speed. It can't get up to speed if you hang on to the main rotors. Pretty easy to overcome, but hang on for dear life!

This is a REALLY good discussion as i see alot of newbies getting into bad habits..

but i see somethings on here that are getting overlooked to.

CHECK YOUR STUNT SWITCH! i've accidently had this switch flipped on with the trans in the case and after carring the heli to the flightline and turning the THrottle hold off it scared the living crap out of me.

luckily i wasn't holding the heli or starting it w/o TH on.
