e-Ikarus Piccolo-Eco 8/16 > Any ideas why this is happening??

I've been flying my ECO 8 off and on for about a year now and can quite happily fly circuits and the odd bit of nose in when my brain's engaged.

Recently the heli has developed a habit for some reason thats starting to become expensive!!!

After flying around perfectly happily for a number of minutes the tail starts to pirouette uncontrollably ....... and I reach for the Credit Card

I've changed gyros, the tail servo, its not interference because I've swapped out the radio gear and mechanically it all seems fine as far as I can tell. Different battery packs make no difference and I would have thought that if the power drops suddenly the lift would go before the tail.

It's always OK when I start flying.

Even if I just hover in the garden I can guareentee it will make a bid for self destruction after a while.

Any ideas before I permanently re-design it with a club hammer and go back to flying planks !!!!!!!!!

Cheers Blade

maybe obvious but (belt tension)? Is it slipping around the pulley?

Thanks Tryan,

Belt tension is fine, though will double check that either pulley isn't slipping on its shaft

Used to have a Super Glide with Stage 1 about 10 years ago, but the neighbours objected to me tripping their car alarms every time I went past

Ive never flown my eco8 went to bladecpp to learn cheaper parts. Ive just hopped it a couple times it now gathers dust till I think I can fly helis. Are you using mechanical or eccpm mixer? Ive built mechanical and see a good bit of flex with the tail servo it adjust more tail pitch with collective on flexible pushrod. Ive considered removing it and letting the Gy240 keep the tail.

Does it always go in the same direction? Something slipping in the tail drive (such as one of the pulleys slipping on the shaft) will always cause the nose to go left. If it ever goes to the right you can pretty much assume it's not loss of tail drive but something else.

Something that will minimize the damage if it is the tail drive slipping is to hit throttle hold immediately and auto-rotate to a landing instead. In an autorotation there is no torque turning the heli, so the pirouette will stop (or greatly reduce anyway) even without tail drive. My V1 Shogun used to have tail drive failures quite regularly, and doing an autorotation minimized the carnage, even though I'm not that good at them!

Oh and bladebeater just so you know a stage one kit is now the norm. Damn choked down leaned out for emissions control while city buses burn my eyes. Do us all a favor get back on and ride.

Hello, when you loose tail rotor power... do you also loose main blade power (heli drops by itself)? It doesn't sound like it, but still check your one way bearing and make sure it's not slipping inside the plastic or aluminum housing.

Bladebeater! Had exactly that problem, preceded by a twitch or two before it starts yeh? Static my friend!! I solved mine by replacing the plastic pulleys at both ends of the belt (ali) and then spray with a small ammount of a silicon based product like furniture polish! Everyone thinks I'm super house proud when I turn up at the field with my 'Mr. Sheen' lemon fresh! Good Luck

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

Its funny that I'm always happy to do autos on the sim but in the real world ......

I now definitely have a suspect - the plastic pulley on the tail tranmission shaft can slip though only if a fairly strong force is applied, something I hadn't picked up earlier.

Intrestingly I've also heard from another source about the potential static problem.

The obvious answer is I'll try replacing the parts as you suggest Jungle Bob (though I have to say personally I'm more of a Pine man myself )

Good Luck Bladebeater. Who makes 'pine' tail gears then?. You may have to try the 'jungle' here in SE Asia and then you might appreciate why I spend so much time there!

Looks like I might be making them out of pine !!

The only place I've found the ali pulleys so far is http://www.fxaeromodels.com/product...products_id=684

and are out of stock!!

Does anyone know of another source?? In the meantime I'll try looking around some of the German outlets.

Cheers

this reply isn't going to be too helpful but it might get you started. I found a little one man (actually I don't know how tall he was but you know what I mean!) operation who mail ordered mine to me. He supplies electrical bits and pieces, Midlands based? Sorry this is vague but I can't for the life of me remember (age). Where in Surrey are you? I'm originally from Kingston

jungle bob is right, Ashtek Elctronics is the place you want in the UK, he had a few made when he was flying an Eco8. Think he still has them in stock. Google the name and you'll find his site.

Ahh Guildford. Remember it well! I was just down the road in Long Ditton, Kingston. The horse shoes were in the riding school at Imber Court (Police Club) where I managed to secure a key to fly as and when I wanted. Nice space to play!
Nice one Scoot....the rewards of teamwork eh? Glad you got what you needed Bladebeater, and hope it resolves your problems, worked for me!
