Bergen R/C Helicopters > 2 tails

I just kind of jumped into the Bergen camp with both feet.
I have just purchased and recieved 2 Used Bergen gassers from RR Classifieds. I am pretty happy with both machines.
One is an EB with 810's and a large metal tail gear box pictured here in black.
The other is a newer gasser (shorter boom W/710's) with a much smaller silver metal tail gear box.
The smaller gear box weights about half of the larger one, are there any performance issues with one or the other?
I noticed on both tails that the tail blade grips have maybe 1/16 to 1/32 of play on the tail hub spindle. That is to say that you can push in or pull out on the tail grip. Is this normal? I backed out the tail spindle bolt, applied locktight, and cranked it down pretty good, still has play. Neither of these machines have any signs of excessive wear, one is almost brand new.
I have been flying x-cell 1005 gasser for 8 years, but different machines have different quarks.
Would like some input from the folks that fly these beasts

If your done with the bantor....

The tail play is normal and should not be removed under pain of death...or at least verbal lashing from Chris Bergen.

I think the black tail is the 'industrial twin' tail. It was an upgrade at some point in the not so distant past.

The lighter silver metal one will work well for you as long as you have the G230 motor and don't put on the G260 motor ,,if you do that the gears will eventually go as they can't hold the torque ,,,get hot and strip .

That's not neccesarily true. It depends which tail you have. If the tail output shaft is 6MM you can't kill it. I have a G26 and the lighter tail. I was able to take 16oz of counter balance weight off by taking off the industrial tail.

It is true in this case ,,if you look at the above pix ,,he has the old smaller output shaft gear box ,,not the new Magnum lighter silve one and believe me if he does any hard flying with a 260 it will go.

I have used both and fly AP exclusively. I had good luck with the little silver one until about a year or so into flying with it. Then I kept stripping them. Since I have put on the heavier, black industrial version with the larger gears, I have had zero issues and the gears look just like they did the day I installed it. I believe that Bergen may have come up with another updated silver gearbox, upgraded from their origial version...someone who actual knows will have to confirm this. But, I believe that may also be reliable for normal flying around and may not suffer the troubles I had with my older version and what some of other posters mentioned.

Tail Box

The larger black tail bos is the industrial tailbox, the smaller tail box is the origional tail. This box runs great on the glow machines as well as the gasser with the 230 engine. Several years ago Bergen red designed the smaller tail box to handle the incresed torque of the 260 engine. I would give Chris a call and upgrade to the newer style box if running a 260 engine.

tail upgrade

there is a upgrade that i know about...it is a slightly beefier tail output bellcrank (at the tail)i believe that there was a problem with the crank cracking, under what cercumstances i do not know.
