I think it's increadible that some of you guys try to bash me. I put the info heare for you to wake up. If I wanted bashing I would have talked only to my wife.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No kidding. You're freakin house almost burned down and people on here are bashing you. Seriously? Leave the guy alone, he has had a tough enough week already.

I second that!

I did this myself during early days of lipo (pre balance tab). He knows he did something stupid. Knowing that, did he expose his mistake to be bashed by you guys? I think he exposed his mistake to benefit RR comunity. Have some consideration guys.

HUMAN ERROR STRIKES AGAIN?

and what did you learn?

AN ammo box from the local army-navy store ($3) works for me...unnattended and away from other flammables.

Glad you were home with your fire extinguisher handy in order to put out anything else but the lipo itself.

Best of luck!

As a point of interest some mobile phones (and other devices) use Lipo technology instead of Li-ion because it can be molded into any shape and is generally smaller because it can have less packaging.

you cant compare our lithium polymer packs to lithium ion packs. lithium ion packs are much more robust and tolerant of abuse. they also have a steel jacket around them!

The steel jacket does not do much for you if the battery burst into flame. The PC batteries have a lot of protective circuits to prevent overcharging or over-discharging. Even with these safety features there have been several cases where laptop batteries have been recalled. I believe DELL was the most recent one.

These LiPo fires are very rear but they can happen either from misuse or product defects so you should take appropriate precaution while charging. I always use a battery bunker, a cell balancer and my charger (Triton) has a thermal probe that will stop the charger if the temperature gets to high. I think this combination provides very good protection againt these issues. Watching the battery charge is good practice of course but in real life it is not going to happen all the time and it may not prevent a fire either.

if you do choose to use something like an ammo can, take a couple/few plastic bags and fill them up with sand and put enough on the bottom to cover the bottom of the can, and have enough to cover up your lipos as well. that way, if the lipos ever go up in flames, they'll melt the plastic bags and the sand will dump out and smother the flames.

I charge on my work bench on a piece of 16" tile with my lipo in a clay pot bottom with the pot turned upside down on top the lipo. Seems to work. 2 Fire Ext. hanging on the wall.I had a TX fire on trickle charge in 1983 that was just dumb luck I caught it before it burned down my parents house. Once something like that happens you really never feel safe charging anything. We must always take extreme care.

The bad part is that the pot is going to fly across the room when the battery goes.

That is a possibility. A larger hole in the top of the pot would reduce the confinement and stop it from happening. It all depends on how the lipo went up, whether it exploded or burst into flames. If it was the latter you'd be safe, but you can't control that factor.

When lipos "explode" they don't really go off like a firecracker. Watch the videos JDBaltimore posted...Ron

I charge mine in the fireplace beside my desk. No doubt the first time I get cocky because nothing ever goes wrong and charge them on my desk I'll burn the house down.

The bright side of this story is a new heli, charger, balancer etc. all on the insurance company! It could be a hell of a lot worse.

I think it's because that canopy is a pain to get off and on. I would not do it peronally. If the battery goes, you lose a heli also! Too much of a risk for me...Ron

Well I am really glad that you made out so good . It took a big pair to go down there with a piddly fire extinguisher . I wasn't there but most of the basement fires I have been to when you open the door the flames come over your head and it is like descending into HELL . So you made out good . But I think everyone is correct that you do need some kind of fire proof container or liposac to charge your batteries in and being around while they are charging isn't such bad idea . I myself if I have to leave while my battery is on charge , I just turn the charger off . I have fought to many fires that people said "But I was only out of the room a minute " and now they have no house . Fire is nothing to play with, and you would be surprised how quick a small fire will consume your entire house right in front of your eyes while you hear the sirens on the firetrucks coming !

Sorry if this has been mentioned already; I didn`t have time to read the whole thread.

I bought a fireproof safe at Walmart for about $25 (Canadian). They have several sizes available. They latch/lock shut too. A small indent along the lip can easily be made to let wires pass in order to latch the box shut or provide some air circulation.

I have little doubt these "safes" would contain a lipo fire. They are a couple inches thick with what appears to be some sort of ceramic mixture. With this box, I will charge Lipos unattended in the middle of my concrete (garage) floor

i wonder what the insurance company would say if you burnt your house down and they found out it was from your LI-Po's charging and you weren't following the guidelines....
