QUOTE..."6cuda6 and Hitchhiker and....

It must feel great to be perfect. It is so nice to hear that there are someone out there to look up to. I, on the other hand, still have much to learn in life"

Hay wait a minute....no one said anything about being perfect!!! It is just common sense, when the manufactuer states something in the manual and the battery instructions say the same and if you look through the post on this site and many other "battery fires are common".

I for one am very sorry that you had a fire...i'm very glad it didn't get worse than it did!!!

When i charge any kind of battery i try to do it in an area that will not be a problem IF something happens, it's just the way we were tought to do it in my trade.....

Watching them for an hour is not going to happen and I highly doubt anyone here sits around staring at it for an hour. I charge mine outside on the driveway in a metal box so if something did happen its not going to burn the house down. It may be overkill but I also store mine in one of those fire rated safes from Target. The safe is only 25 bucks, cheap insurance and peace of mind.

Sorry to hear about your mishap, could have been worse. If you do it again I won't feel sorry for you. Live and learn, I know I've done plenty of things like that too, no big deal.

HeliKalle,

Sorry for to hear that. But glad you were able to extinguish it really quickly.

As for "unnatended" charging, well, nobody can just sit and watch the lipos charging for 1.5/2 hours and do nothing. Periodical checking is doable. Of course the manufacturer will write everything to avoid any liability.

Some lipos are much more fragile than the other ones. Apex for example always puff up a bit. Somebody reported the same thing with DN lipos.

Truerc lipos are also tested to not inflame. And I have abused them pretty heavily, everything except charging as NiCd, NiMh. I cut them, slowly discharged to 0v by accident, revived them (charged as Pb CV-CC until lipo charger accepted). Dropped with visible damage - had to discard that cell that started warming up, but it never puffed, overcharged to 4.5v. Their tests show exactly like Kokams.

If you don't mind, could you tell me the brand of your extinguisher, now that it did it's job very well?

I want to buy one myself.

Thanks.

invest in a lipo sack.... and never get in the habit of charging your batteries while they're strapped to the heli... notice how the heli is 90% destroyed and there wasn't even a crash involved..

Thanks for giving us all a wake up call. Your a brave man to come on RR and say what has happened.
Any more info on what might have happened. Was it at the beginning of the charge of towards the end ? Could the battery have been damaged somehow before you started the charge ? Could the battery have been drained a little too low ? What about what the charger was set to ? had you charged a different battery before ?
Like others have already said try and look on the positive side... it could have been worse - someone may have been hurt or died. Everything else can be replaced.

For those wondering...the balancer in the picture can not secure the charge if it detects a problem...of course the TP1010/210 combo will as the balancer "talks" to the charger...

but...for those without a TP1010/ 210 combo...FlightPower has their V-balancer that is not dedicated to a certain "charger" brand...AND it will DISCONNECT the battery from the charger if it detects a problem with the battery...relatively inexpensive piece of mind at around $45 to $50 street price...

Not 100% sure if it would shut it down... but if the PB6 was connected to the 902 charger it can communicate.

I use a Pulsar 2 charger. Not the same brand as the blancer. They can not talk to eachother and it is not possible to charge via the balancer. It just balances.

I think it's increadible that some of you guys try to bash me. I put the info heare for you to wake up. If I wanted bashing I would have talked only to my wife.

Wake up. Get real.

nothing is 100% safe and i really dont trust anything connected to my batteries,i have the 1010c and the v210 balancer but even this top of the line units dont put out a fire,i saw someone once posted some ideas on how to charge lipos more somewhat safer,

by using somekind of plastic bag full of sand right over the lipo in a container, this way if the lipo catches fire, the fire will cause the bag to ripp and the sand will put out the fire,

i usualy charge mine in an army amo box it costs no more then $12 at the local army surplus store this way if the battery ever catches fire is not going to expand, the safest way to charge lipos is outdors but you still should keep an eye on them,im no expert at this but i do practice safety at all times, this hobby is suposed to be fun, dont let it turn into a nightmare

I was not bashing you.... only trying to point out that the PB6 balancer can communicate with the 902 charger as someone else had said the TP 1010/210 can shut down if it detects a fault.
No malice intended.

I want to make clear that I usually works in my hobbyroom during charging lipos but now I'm not sure I want to do that anymore. This lipo really exploded - there are fine fragments of copper from the cells all over the room and probably acid too. For those of you who charge lipos in your livingroom just to not leave them unattendent - sounds stupid to me especially if you have small children arround like I do.

This time I was cutting some vinyl in my hobbyroom during charging but when my wife and kidds got home I got upstairs for 5-10 minutes before I heard the alarm. I really don't consider my behaviour irresponsible.

And by the way - all possible disclaimer on goods are just too much for me. I'm allmost surtain that they are there just for the manufactor saving his a@@. The disclaimer is not law but a recomendation for not voiding the warranty. If I'm not misstaking speeding is not alloed on Swedish roads - still I do it every day. Not much but still I'm braking the LAW!

In the past I worked as a explosives and napalm specialist in the army so it's not the first time I put out a fire so to say. I used a powder extinguisher in this case but it would have worked just as well with a blanket I assume.

Good luck with your charging!

Guys I think there is alot from Christian's experience that we all can learn from, and it's more than just attending to the Lipo's when they are charging. In my mind containment of the battery while it is charging in the event of an explosion is probably the key factor.

It sounds like things went bad so quickly for Christian that even if he had been in his shop the entire time that ther may not have been anything he could have done to prevent the explosion, only react to it once it began.

Thanks for the post Christian. Your experience has inspired me to finally get off my butt & order a LipoSack like I have been putting off for such a long time.

Our cell phones and laptops have Li/Ion but I dont stand there watching them

you cant compare our lithium polymer packs to lithium ion packs. lithium ion packs are much more robust and tolerant of abuse. they also have a steel jacket around them!

HeliKalle,

That's interesting, I wasn't even considering powder extinghisher. Thanks!

With your experience which type of extinguisher is generally the best to have around in the house?
