At least he was home, when i had my trex i would never sit there and watch the battery charge. I would follow others advice and not charge them near anything else. Maybe if you set the charger and battery on the concrete floor and away from anything that could ignite you would be better off. Sorry about your loss and consider it a hard lesson learned.

Good luck

Dave

I may be assuming too much, but I see a balancer. Was it being used? If so, I am rather surprised that a fire took place, as I would believe that it would stop the charge in an overvolt condition.

It must feel great to be perfect. It is so nice to hear that there are someone out there to look up to. I, on the other hand, still have much to learn in life.

I hear that a lot.

But seriously, its not about 'being perfect' which I never claimed to be. When it comes to a potential fire...youre damn right I watch these things like a hawk!! Its bad enough losing a pack to fire, but losing your other equipment or even your house? Not worth the risk.

Any details on what caused the fire?

No, I don't know what caused it.
It was a X-power 3S 1700mAh pack from http://www.airmedia.se/index.php?ac...od&productId=46
Yes, the balancer was used.

Sorry to hear about your new scope going up in flames...

Anyways.. this could have happened standing right there watching, or not, im sure.

I charge my batts outside, in a lipo-sack if its handy, if not (or battery is to large) i just hang out with it, and "keep an eye" on it, as much as thats worth.

I think its important people posts threads like this. It helps the rest of us remember how dangerous these are, and to be more carefull even if we are "being perfect".

Don't bash the guy... i think his ego was damaged enough in the fire.

Im off to buy a fire extinguisher as we speak.

They didn't. Watch them from the side and they look like two bananas . Also badly burnt on the bottom side.

This is a reason I allways ONLY buy electriclly protected batteriers like FP or TP. Cheapie batteries suck! I know they ALL can go up in flames, but I still would rather have a higher quality battery.
Glad everyone is ok, at least.

Looks like the balancer was independent from the charger. Thus, no way the charger would have been stopped by the balancer. I think that would only happen in a setup like the TP1010 charger and 205 balancer, where the two communicate.

No thanks to electrics for me, I have never seen my case of fuel just burst into flames before.

If you treat ANYTHING improperly it will fail. I'm not saying he did anything wrong here but obviously there was a problem. I have personally seen nitro helis, planes, and boats go up in flames. Just a matter of keeping everything within the guidelines. If he charged the lipo on the wrong setting, that could definately happen.

Hey HeliKalle, I know this thing sucks big time but is only money Thank GOD your family and house is ok.

So just curious, do you insurance pay or cover some of these damages?

Good luck,

i have admit i always charge mine in my workshop whch is away from the house at about 100ft,

i always leave mine, i would not leave a lypo over night, but i certainly dont stand there and watch them charge for 4 hrs,

I often leave Nicads and NIMH and LI-IOn batteries on a trickle charge over night, and have never worried about them,

But after seeing your pics i will now, i have to say i do have a fire alarm and a fire extinguisher for both electrical and liquid fires, the worrying thing for me is i store all my jet fuel and and my butabe propane gas and all my nitro in the same summer house,
80 litres of jet fuel, after eading your ost i have moved to else where in my garden,

Sorry to hear baout the fire in your home, at the end of the day it does demo how tempromental our power supplies are, i have had a lypo swell up whilst i have been in the room and hiss and smoke,
scarey

I'm guilty of not always watching my lipos as they charge but I ALWAYS charge them at 3/4C, with a balancer plugged in, AND inside a 50 cal. Ammo can. I still have to get off my arse and glue a ZipLoc smal bag of sand to the ceiling of the ammo can. This way, if there's a flame, it would burn the bag and dumping sand on the flames.

Our cell phones and laptops have Li/Ion but I dont stand there watching them, come to think about it, I have had at least 2 NiCad fires but never a Li/Po fire.

Yeah, I can see that now. I hadn't noticed that the cable from the charger was direct to a charge lead.

That's a shame, as I think that balancer can be used inline and charged through. It would have stopped the charge if used in that manner.

I am very glad for you and your family that your loss was not greater. Safety lessons like this suck, but you're all alive, and you still have a roof over your head.

I will be very glad when the latest lipo technology becomes commonplace and incidents like this never happen again. The new Kokam 30C cells will not burst into flames even if over charged. There are other similar offerings coming out from other mfgs.

A balance charger is a great idea - no issues with over charging then.
