Safety - RC Helis are not toys > Basement on FIRE

HeliKalleSenior Heliman - Location: Malmö, Sweden -
Today is not a good day! I heared the fire alarm from the basement, grabbed a fire extinguicher (how the ... do one spell that) and ran down to my hobbyroom where I was charging a Lipo pack.

The Lipo, helicopter and alot of other stuff were on fire with flames reaching the seeling. After putting the fire out I realized how bad it all could have gone without the fire alarm and fire ext... So I belive this is my luckiest bad day ever!?

No thanks to electrics for me, I have never seen my case of fuel just burst into flames before.

At the expense of sounding like an a@@....are your not suppost to be watching while Li-Po /Li-ion batteries are charging??? I though it read somewhere in the manual that you should never leave them un-attended while charging......

Live and learn....could have been way worse....glad damage was minimal and no one got hurt/killed....

Watch your battery when you are charging it. Charge it outside. Charge it in a LipoSack.

This is 100% avoidable. Good thing you had a smoke alarm and an extinguisher!!

Most probably don't but you can see the results.... i wonder what the insurance company would say if you burnt your house down and they found out it was from your LI-Po's charging and you weren't following the guidelines......

this is starting be more of a frequent problem....sounds like it's time to pay attention!!!

On nimh and nicad.......it always states to "never charge unattended." This could have happened in the time it took to go upstairs and get something to drink. When I do charge mine inside, they are actually behind the screen of my brick fireplace I sit and kind of keep an eye on them while I'm looking at the tv.

6cuda6 and Hitchhiker and....

It must feel great to be perfect. It is so nice to hear that there are someone out there to look up to. I, on the other hand, still have much to learn in life.

Holy crap, that must have been scary. Sorry to hear about that. Glad it wasn't worse. Looks like a new heli is in order.

I would not fault you at all. Just have to remember that lipos have the potential to be quite dangerous. Like I said earlier, the fire could have happened in an instant. Glad you had a smoke detector and fire suppression. It's a lesson learned. There is not one person on this board that has not made some sort of mistake in their heli flying career......but there are ones that will say they haven't.

The heli wasn't the worst. My new $1000 oscilloscope was damaged too.

She was really understanding. Might be because this was my first bad misshap in 22 years of flying.
