Safety - RC Helis are not toys > almost killed myself with my heli

this topic is for thoose new pilots and experienced pilots thinking RC Helicopters are yust for fun.

yesterday I experienced the worst fear an RC pilot can have...!!!

First of all IT WAS MY FAULT...!!! I was making a loop and in the middle of the maneuver, I got scared because I nottice I was making the maneuver too close to me; I tryed to take out the heli of the maneuver and I didit in the wrong way. In yust a fraction of a second the helicopter was flying over me and in my direction (FULL SPEED) for my bad luck I lost orientation of the heli, the heli was in a inverted flight and I donīt have experience in inverted flight. At this moment I begin to move trying to stay away froom the helicopter way and oviously it keept moving to me out of control; at this moment iīm totally and completley in terror, I saw myself DET. At the last moment I donīt know how I manage to take it out of my way, but the direction the heli flew was in the spectators way (womens and children included) full speed. I donīt know how I manage to hold an almost satable inverted hover to avoid someone hurt yust where the spectators was watching my flight. The scary part comes now; in this moment I was in shock and I donīt remember how the heli crashed and ended straight up yust as a normal and controled landing.

thankyou god nobody was hurt at the end.

RC Helicopters are not toys, rc helicopters are a BIG and serious responsibillity, always fly safe.

Girls and RC Helicopters are dangerous...!!! but we need them...!!!

don't trick yourself into thinking that a TREX 600 is any safer than a 50 size nitro heli, it is the same deal if it hits someone or something. take your flying a bit slower, try to only fly maneuvers you are comfortable with. Maybe you should get a simulator so you can work things out before you try them for real. the sim will allow you to find your comfort zone before you try something for real. be safe, happy landings

flippin and dippin, flying tail to the ground, I fly my heli's like a rabid greyhound!!!

Also try your moves further away and higher up if you can. it gives you a much larger margin for aborting a bad move.

We all make mistakes and hopefully you will have learned a BIG lesson from this without any serious carnage. The occasional scare is a good thing; just do the maths on the blade forces

tell me about it,I lost orientation on my heli too, the thing hovered obout 30' over my head and while trying to manage control over it I gave the wrong input and just pointed down to me, at that time I knew it was going to hit me and I panic and covered my head with my arms and then I just basically RUN FOR MY LIFE.Run like for 20 good feet, I triped and fell and broke my transmiter, after that it crashed right where I was standing 3 seconds before.
After that I have a whole new perspective and respect of my heli.
NEVER,NEVER been so scared in my life.
NOT FUNNY AT ALL.

probably the most natural thing to do is to try to save the heli from crashing, I'm sure most of us, even all of us are guilty of that one time or another,, but the logical and safe thing to do would to crash the heli before it hurts someone or yourself,,

it must have been a great relief to you that no one got hurt, thank God no one did..

The lesson that should be learned from all of our mishaps is to practice orientation from all directions before trying advanced maneuvers regardless of how boring it might seem and how anxious we are to move on to more advanced flying. It could save alot of money in the long run and most important save you or someone else from seriously getting hurt or killed.

Something us lazy fliers like to do is fly out of the boot of the car. That means people are only a few feet behind you.

If I smack myself with my heli, I can deal with that. Hitting someone in the pits would be terrible.

I don't know if it was a factor when this happened, but was there a big gap between the pits and the pilot? Does it need fixing so it can't happen again.

No-ones a perfect flier, no matter how much sim time. Mechanical failure can happen anytime.

Glad everyone is OK. Check that distance!

You say it, I had more than 70 flights without any issue, and then this one day when the gyro paper came off, and just one week later the heli trew a tail blade. Lucky nothing happened else than just new blades and few other parts...

thankyou all for your answers.

After this experience I have to say that Iīve learn the lesson:

1- allways have respect for your heli
2- fly 100% secure specially in new maneuvers.
3- fly high learning new maneuvers

Wasps:
believeme, I tryed to save the helicopter froom crashing to avoyd someone hurt; the problem was that the helicopter was moving so fast in a inverted flight over my head, that I couldnīt do anything; froom my perspective and with my experience the helicopter was in caos (Iīm not talking about the maneuver piro flip) I honestly donīt know how I manage to hold at the end a second of inverted hover. thanks god everyone was watching the helicopter and ran away froom the heli. After everything ended, I was in shock yust watching nobody was hurt.

YES...!!! I need to have more responsibillity flying and specially learning new maneuvers. and fly relaxed I admit I was a little tense in that flight.

for now on, Iīll have 2 or 3 weeks of heli vacation; no helis in a few weeks.

I allways check my heli before the first flight of the day or in the day before flight.

Mechanical failures:-

My friend had the gears strip in his Milli elevator servo. It checked OK, lifted off and hovered, idle up, forward stick and BAM! full backwards on it's back at several MPH. He sidestepped-it and it thrashed itself to death next to him

I've seen a main blade come off in flight (closely followed by the swash and mainshaft in the opposite direction ) but never a tailblade. I've heard about that though (particularly ECO 8) and I guess it's pretty 'interesting' for a while!

Woody blade coverings coming off is fairly loud and spectacular, but not life threatening.

Someone else: Swashplate separating in the hover at 30ft just resulted in a vertical drop and a pile of bits.

Tail linkage dropping seems common on Raptors. At first you think it's your tail boom support and you should be careful landing. Then it all becomes horribly clear what's really dropped off

Battery fell out of someone else's Skyfox. That was on idle and -ve pitch, so we just let it run out.

Carb loosened on a Rossi powered F1 Carbon. That revved right up and he held it hovering for several seconds until the rod let go.

Plug failed on mine inverted one hot summer day. Whipped it over and landed it. If it had been anywhere less convenient, I'd have lost it.

Clutch screws backed out and stalled the motor. Again I was able to land it.

Tail drive gear on a friends Raptor 60 spun. Fairly comprehensive smash with that.

Short circuit on the gyro extension lead intermittantly killing the radio on another persons Raptor. Luckily, just glitched when the engine was started.

Another friend. OS70 melted the piston, it decided to do it at the least convenient time.

(I've probably overdone this post )
