Did Compass ever release the 80 durometer dampers?

Gscott,

I had a set of some new dampeners that I was testing. They ended up being too soft. I had a boom strike while practicing piro flips at about 70 ft. The heli came down in pieces and required a complete rebuild. This info was passed on to Buzz at Motion Unlimited so that he could forward the results to Compass.

Are you having any issues with the stock dampeners? If they are too hard, here is a quick fix to help reduce/eliminate the wobble that many of us experience during spool ups/downs and autos. I used the orange cone shaped grinding stone on my Dremel and removed a small amount (about 1 mm) of material from the inside edge of both sides of the stock dampeners. This allowed the spindle to move more freely in the dampeners, yet still remained very rigid for 3D flight. I think this may be the best compromise for the stock dampeners right now.

did you decided to keep your Knight 3D?
I don't think there is a need to softer dampners. I only get that wobble in autos but that's just me slowing down the HS too much. I let a buddy of mines fly my Knight 3D in a auto contest and he liked it. I didn't see any wobbles when he was doing it. That dude can auto on a dime!

You should have gave me the dampners to test out. Than you wouldn't have crashed. Lol Your too hard on the sticks

Tony,

Unfortunately I sold mine. I thought my Evo flew better but after flying the Evo again yesterday I realized it's not as snappy. Since they were sharing components I never got the chance to fly them back to back. I still think my Kasama Titan has faster cyclic but I think that had more to do with not being able to get the same cyclic on the 3D without binding. I should have been more patient but then again why change now . Currently I'm waiting on a 600N Pro but will keep my eyes open for a good deal on a used 3D.

GScott,

Good to see you back in the forum.

I felt the other way about my R50/Kasama. My Knight 3D is just as fast (maybe faster) than my R50/Kasama was, but it is much smoother in FFF (no tendency to pitch) and hovering. With the better control layout, higher CG, and lighter weight, it feels like a larger bird.

Thanks Gary. Do you have nay pics of the damper mod? Just to clarify, when you say to remove 1mm I assume you mean 1mm as measured from the outside correct?

Sorry but I do not have any pics. And yes you are correct. I actually inserted the cone grinding bit in, at a med.-low speed, until it made contact with the outer edge of the dampener and then pushed the bit in about 1 mm. I did this on both sides.

DIY Your Damper

Knight Series apply some really hard damper to satify the 3D pilots' need. However, the best damper hardness sometime depends on the weather conditions. when temperature of the day get higher, damper tends to get softer. When it is colder, damper tends to get harder. If your knight wob a bit when under 1700rpm, the damper might be a bit too hard. Here is the way to make it softer. as shown on left, put the damper on your starter, turn the starter on, use a file to cut a chamfer 1~1.5mm. The more you cut, the softer it gets, but we do not suggest any chamfer over 1.5mm as then you are under a serious risk of boom strike. Soft damper result in a 'softer' 3D, but hard damper sometime cause wobbing when RPM is too low. We suggest cut the chamfer bit by bit to get the best hardness u need.

When assemblying, make sure the unchamfered side facing the centre hub.

If this is still too hard for you, or you like to use metal grips, or you like to practice FAI style, you can try our red damper which is even softer

Gary,

Is this how you modified yours? For some reason I pictured removing the material from the inner hole that the spindle goes through not the outside edge of the damper.

Gary didn't do his this way.
He did it just like you thought he did. He removed the inside of the dampners

I know what I did wrong. I only got the wobbles when I installed the Kasama main grips. Took off the Kasama metal grips and put the stock grips back on. No wobbles what so ever.

Maybe since we live in the south the weather is warmer and the dampners stay soft unlike ya'll lucky folks up north with the cool weather

It makes sence to put the angle on the dampers like Compass is illustrating. By cutting the angle, the edge is softened and that would give sort of an expo effect to the damping.

I am going to get a couple more sets of dampners and try this out. I wish I would have stumbled upon this method earlier.
