Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > RAPTOR 90 Crash due to pin coming out

Well I knew for a fact that the pins came out, and when I built my 90SE, I heat shrunk the pin in, and well I had a crash today. My tail blades decided to stop spinning(sensing the pin is gone:rolleyes

So I look at the carnage, and my bottom gear in the tail case(frame part) is freewheeling(no pin signal again).

So I pull it aprat, find the heat shrink and NO PIN!!!

How does that one happen

Drill a small inspection hole in the tailcase.
When you fit the pin, a bit of thin CA works well.

Its not the tail case, its the other set of gears that are on the shaft by the main gear

Do what a buddy of mine suggested.......take a piece of brass tubing and cut it to fit over the gears. Works like a champ.

Really sorry to hear about the crash.

Perhaps try grinding small flats at the midpoint of the pins, then tightening the grubscrew (with loctite) against these flats.

Pins

I've had this happen too, although I hadn't put heat shrink over mine. The heat shrink I don't think is stout enough so that the pin won't eventually work it's way through if it does come loose. So long as you don't cover it over, with a small flashlight you can get a look at the pin as you spin the blades and can verify whether or not it's in place. Some of the shafts weren't tapped all the way to the cross hole so the set screw will feel as if it's tight against the cross pin when it's really just stopping at the end of the threads. I haven't had any more problems after cleaning the threads out so I could tighten the set screw appropriately, using green Loctite, and putting a second set screw to back up the first. A piece of brass tube or nylon sleeve over the top should gaurantee it won't come out, but I haven't tried them. Grinding a flat doesn't seem a great idea to me because the pins have been known to break anyway and the flat just weakens it at the critical spot. Hope this helps. steve.

I feel your pain Jason! It sucks twice as bad when it was not something you did but mechanical failures.

I have seen the copper tube first hand that KINGER talks about. It is the best fix I have seen to date. Works on the tail gear as well. Copper tubing. Takes an exacto, or screw driver to pry it off to expose the pin for gear removal.

What size copper tube works best?

Jason,

The easiest and quickest way to prevent the pin from coming out is to use a dremel tool to grind a small curved notch in the middle of the pin (not a flat). Once the setscrew bits into this notch, it will never come loose until you need to remove it.

Remember the tail is spinning at 20K rpm, heat shrink may not hold th pin in under such inertia.

He glued the pin on, heatshrank it and then glued the heatshrink(CA)

I hope this freaking works

did the pin go around the shrink tubing or through it? I use the head shrink tubing on my 50's tail gear + I've gotten in the habit of drilling a 1/4" inspection hole so I can see that it look right.
just curious to see if it was possibly a weak heat shrink, possibly too much heat and it pulled too tight? or a sharp edge on the pin gut it's way through? I've thought about a drop of thin CA to keep the tubing in place but on the tail there really is no where for the tubing to go once it's all assembled. don't know much about the 60/90 since I don't have one .... YET!

...yep...

What looked like happened was the set screw backed off a tad, and the heat shrink slid around just enought o allow for the pin to come flying out.

Use a second set screw behind the first one to prevent it from coming out.

sounds like a ring made from copper or possibly PVC pipe may be the answer. Is there room for a thicker material ring on the TT gears? I know the tail has very little room - if the H.S. tubing is just a little, like 1mm too long it'll drag on the case.

...yep...
