oh god im selling all of my paintball stuff. i cant justify spending the price of a new lipo for one day of fun, when i can buy a lipo and have several days of fun. yay for helis! on another note, i heard back from gruntbull, and they will do orders for a minimum 75 bucks, but i we end up having several people getting plates made, we can send the parts in for as low as 7.50 per, less if we send more parts

ok, just received the plans from casey, and i must say it looks nice. whoever made this drawing though is more than thorough. there are so many danged dimensions

but heres the skinny: raw materials being 6061 aluminum, we are looking at $19 plus shipping, but we will have to cut 5/8" off of the protrusion that come out the front. the other option is get a 36" long piece and make two to the full specified length. that works out to $18 and some change for each plate, plus an extra 10 or so inches that can go towards a 450 bottom plate, or another part, such as the center brace that was also supplied with casey's plans pack. we can make 3 of those with the remaining material (assuming i dont screw up)

so what do you think?

Glad to see the plans are coming of use.
I had those stashed for a while now
If you decide to mass produce them, we will have to run it by the guy who designed the plans. Let me know and I'll send him an email.
(he might even have an updated version by now too!)

depending on how much work is involved in actually machining them. as far as i can tell, itll be 4 programs on the CNC per plate, plus some time finishing the edges etc. i would actually like to make a run of 10 or so, then we can send them into gruntbull and get the anno'd

as far as getting anything in production, it may be a few weeks. i should be able to finish the prototype and have it in a test chopper around memorial day, and we'll wait for some real world results before making any more. I'd hate to make something and have it break on the first crash (even if it isnt my design)

but ya casey, definitely clear it with the originator if we can make more than the 2 im planning on for now. im gonna go do a few quick fixes to the plans and talk to my prof on wednesday.

my one question is, can we do without an inch or so on that front tongue? cause there are no sizes of aluminum stock on mcmaster that are between 12" and 36". since as modeled the plate is 12.625" long, thats a bit of a problem. what do you guys think?

Check out your local phone book and look for a stock machining shop. Usually you can find a chunk at the local machining hardware store.
I purchased my first bits of aluminum to try on mini mill that would be perfect for this. I think the place was called K&S metals off of main street in riverside, 1 mile south of the 60 fwy They have tons of stock and will also cut to size. I think I paid like $7 for a chunk that would cover two of these type plates.

I have other emails to send tonight, so I'll try and contact the guy I got the plans from then.

what grade aluminum did you get though? you can get aluminum for cheap, but its not necessarily the best in terms of machinability and strength. ill look around SLO and see what i find though

OK, so i spent some time in the lab today and fiddled with the plate design a bit. Also got a volume for the piece, so i can get an estimated weight. it should be about 98g or 3.5oz for the bottom plate using the full length (i might hack off the first inch to make it easier to get raw materials)

the center brace comes out to right around 29g, or an ounce or so.

Also got a better picture of the bottom plate if people want to see the detail a bit better:

can you line me up for 1 of those 600 bottom plate Bryguy ?
i am tired of replacing break OEM platic

most machine shop they stock aircraft quality alum., they are very light weight.. (my bro work on mill b4, but he is trucking now ) he used cnc custom bike parts and auto shock

if all goes well, i might consider doing extras, but i do need to get the go-ahead from the original designer. since im working out of a campus machine shop, they only stock small parts that people can train on. I'm gonna order the metal today and hopefully get going on the prototype by early next week.
