I used the same part from MA (or was
it Bergen?). Works great. Don't overtorque the screw.

Thanks Z, I will stick with the one from Horizon, my LHS can order it for me, and save a buck or two. I like the idea of having a bolt vs. the set screw that comes with the Freya, you strip that set screw, and your screwed. Lately, I've been making a habit of whenever I take out a set screw twice, I install a new one, but with a bolt I wont change as often. I will make sure not to overtorque also.

I think the 11 or 12 tooth. The 12 is probably more geared for the C-spec. Don't know much about the YS.

depends on what head speed you want to run
if you want a high head speed the 12/95 gear ratio is in it's power band around 1900, with the 11\93 it's closer to 1750

I was kind of amazed to see plastic frame and tail belt drive on the x-spec. Never seen the guts of one before. Great pics!!

No they dont make an upgrade kit for the Freya, but you can buy all the individual parts which will add up quite high, you would probably be better off buying a complete Xpec kit

I recently bought an X-Spec w/YS91 from a friend who bought it new and then got busy with other things in life. Anyway, the paperwork that came with the engine recommended gearing anywhere between 7.5 and 8 to 1. I think most folks I've talked to said the YS was happier in the 8 to 8.5 to 1 range. This is my first 90 powered helicopter so I'm don't have the experience with it to say for sure. My machine came with the 12 tooth pinion so I'm running 7.91:1.

I made the maiden flight with the machine today and am very happy with how it feels. I've never had digitals on cyclic before and that's going to take some getting used to. The engine is still breaking in so I'm not pushing it yet.

If this isn't too far off topic, would you folks mind giving me some recommendations on rotor blades? I'm going to use this to start working on my 3D skills which are almost nonexistant at this point. Right now, I've got a set of 700mm blades from MA. The guy I bought the model from say's that 700's are probably a little long. BTW, I have checked the main blade to tail blade clearances and I don't have a problem in that area.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any input you guys care to make.

Steve R.

As long as you run the stock 90-95mm tail blades I think you are OK with the 700's. I run 680's on my X-spec which is like 700's on most machines because the Freya head is a bit larger if you measure from blade bolt to blade bolt. I know most guys run 690's too. If you can see the main and tail blades aren't going to mesh, you should be fine. I would leave the stock gearing even with the YS. Just my opinion. I think the issue with the YS's were guys were running the 8.45 ratio with MP's with problems. Most people don't understand the MP is designed to run the engine at a certain RPM or power band and with the higher gear ratio they were not on that power band. If you are running a standard 90 muffler you won't have to worry.

Just an update and other questions!

I've got several gallons of fuel through the X-Spec to date. It really is a sweet flying helicopter. I updated the cylinder head in the YS to the dual plug Viper head. That made a significant difference right there. I've got a set of 680 NHP's on the bird right now. The engine seems a little happier with the shorter disk. I've also got myself on a list to get hold of a set of CY's 690 Radix blades. I'm curious to see how they do. A friend of mine recently got hold of a set of 720 (I think) and he's really happy with them on his Fury. They replaced a set of 710 V-Blades which he was also happy with but the Radix blades seem "happier" than the V-Blades, they don't talk as much in 3D flips and rolls and seem to hold rpm in auto's a little better. I've got my fingers crossed!

I've been flying the sim quite a bit and trying to transfer that to the real thing. I'm getting a lot more comfortable with the inverted work but sometimes the reflexes are quite there yet so I'm still being conservative on that part. The only complaint I've got with the Freya is that YS 91 drinks fuel like crazy compared to my 60's. Oh well!

On the question part, I was feeling like the stock rubber dampers on the rotor hub were a little on the soft side. I got a set of aftermarket dampers, I think they're just machined delrin, from Rick's RC and am currently flying with them. They seemed to improve the "crispness" of the cyclic during flips and rolls but I'm not sure the rotor head is tracking as true in fast forward flight. It might just be me. I've done some looking around but haven't found anything specific. Are there rubber dampers out there that are somewhere between the stock versions and the hard one's I've currently got on my Freya? I'd like to try a compromise between the two as right now, I feel like I'm flying the extremes and am not completely happy with either. Any imput would be greatly appeciated.

Thanks & Fly Safe,
Steve R.
