umdpru, Lithium manganese packs by apogee are lithium based and they can be punctured without causing a fire(they don't have a 2100 size pack yet for the 450 sized helis though). Lithium tech seems to be improving quite a bit lately. The next few years will be interesting.

Bruce,

Thanks for letting me fly the pack. I've been involved with LI-PO packs for R/C use for years now and for me it is interesting how newer technology/chemistry allows for cells to handle that type of discharge punishment. The power on this pack was very good I admit. I was running the dragy wooden Align mainrotors too. The pack was a little larger in over all dimension from what I normally fly but it will fit in the 450 T-rex. I'd like to see the weight of the pack vs. others too.

As the LI-PO cell manufacturers make better cells we will likely see this more and more. Not hi-jacking this thread, I can say from experience that the TP Extreme cells I use in my T-rex 450's can be run down very low too without hurting the capacity much. I just choose not to do this. They bounce back and come back for more as well.

I suggest to keep a log and lets see how these packs perform after 40 to 75 flights. Trafford is not too far from me. Maybe we can fly the pack outside in the 450 at my outdoor field at a later date too. You could run your diagnosis equipment for more measurments. Just let me know.

Also thanks for coming in to ICR on Saturday to fly indoors. It was good to see you, Ron L. and the rest of the gang. GOOD TIME for sure!

That's realy cool. So you had absolutely no puffing and the pack was within safe temperatures?

From the graph, they appear to hold the voltage very nicely.

An overcharge situation would be destructive, but it would be interesting to see if it burst or caught on fire. I know you won't be able to do such tests, but this is the kind of information I want to know. One 3 cell pack could support 3 destructive tests. The Air Thunder should get the packs into the hands of an independent tester and then publish the results.

RC Pilots want safe packs.

that's pretty darn impressive... recharging back to 12.5 volts with no real problems whatsoever... it'd be interesting to see how many cycles it'll take to get these packs to start tapering off in performance. keep us posted!

I presume you mean 12.6 volts, if they are LiPo, that is full charge voltage.

My charger was flickering right after the charge between 12.5 and 12.6 I just put the lower. I do have temp readings I forgot to add it to the graph, it never got hotter than 93 degrees F.

Great work! Very nice, documented results. I'll try a 2200 for myself.

They may charge up to 12.6, but most recognize 12.46 as the standing full charge state.

Zero Volt Test

Can you do a test and leave the pack pluged into your esc over night to drain to zero volts? Of course unplug motor for the test.

Great to see all the new cell technolgies. Good stuff.

Cra$h’n with a Heli good time!

I am going to discharge to zero volts tonite, I have put another flight on the pack today but the Eagle Tree system will stop recording after the pack drops below 4 volts. I will post results of zero volt test ASAP...

We were talking about on charge voltage. If you stop the charge at 12.5 they are not fully charged.
