Too bad the new sullivan isn't available anywhere. I've been waiting since the end of march.
Got tired of waiting, got the vario instead.

my sullivan starter just gave out. granted it was the older one and not the one pictured. I think it's still under warranty though. What sucks though is one of the allen screws stripped so I can't get it off!! I wonder if I can drill the screw out? How much is the new unit?

Sears sells a tool set that will remove stripped screws etc.

Better than drilling!

The K&S has a plastic sleeve that goes on the OD of the starter shaft and the ID of the starter wand bearing assembly.

The later model K&S allow for a bolt to be inserted to hold it in place in addition to the compression fit.

The dynatron does not have a hole drilledd to accomodate this bolt. If you ever spin the starter and heat up the plastic sleeve it will never hold as well.

Regards,

Alan

I doesn't use screws to clamp it to the starters shaft?

Looks to me they use 3 methods of securing it.
1 through bolt
2 clamp bolts
1 Insert

None of them work?

Thanks

Am about to order the Sullivan starter wand. Tyler, does vertical play in the 6mm hex shaft bother you, ie does the tip slip out of the heli's starter adaptor? I ask, because I'm used to there being no play in my K&S.

DWS6, the fixing system you mention works perfectly on the Torqmaster 180, but I'm not so sure it would secure quite as well without the bolt going through the Torqmaster's drive shaft.

Hopefully the Sullivan clamping system is better matched to the Dynatron.

Because depending on the amount of use, the K&S unit will fail in less than a year. Sooner if doing 90 size engines.

The Sullivan adapter has 12mm bearings versus the K&S 10mm bearings.

The Sullivan has a ball bearing to handle the vertical loads. K&S does not.

Sullivan guaranteed me replacement if it didn't work. K&S did not.

Sullivan is available for assistance if needed

Thanks, rstacy, for the quick reply.

My K&S indeed failed, even with my 50s. The one-way's life is prolonged quite a bit by removing one of the alignment bearings, but after a while it starts slipping intermittently again.

Yep. Thanks to Agusto's excellent thread, I was able to get about another 8 months out of mine.

I agree

with everything rstacy has said. I am having no issues with my sullivan system, and they have been right there when I had a question. They seem committed to making this system very usable for the heli community.

If I was to consider something else, I would go with the Vario long version. Other than that, sullivan first and foremost.

Hi, Just got the Sullivan 6mm shaft, anyone having any difficulty taking the shaft apart for transport. Looking down the wand, is it counter clockwise or clockwise to open ???
Thx

Counter clockwise.
The trick is to hold the main part of the adapter and the knurled part of the adapter only and not the chromed shaft.

Cheers rstacy.. thought it was counter clockwise... its a SOB to open.. will try again tonight. With the Dyntron its a gr8 starter.
Any word on how easy it is to round the tip of shaft.. Im hoping that with care it will be some time before it happens.

I can only say that ours is doing fine. We start mostly 90 size engines and have not had a problem.

I just received my starter and can not seperate the the two parts either. I put an adjustable wrench across the two flats on the top by the shaft output and used pliers with the teeth into the slot at the bottom and no matter how hard I try I cannot get the two pieces to turn. It is clearly crossthreaded or something. I am now beginning to scratch the top because I have put alot of force into trying to turn it. It is still stuck and I gave up and called Sullivan tonight and left a message, we will see if they call me back tomorrow.

I want a replacement now because I did everything I could not to scratch it and still ended up messing it up. It did start to turn after the third try but will not break loose. I never did get it apart.

Wrench

Do you have one of those rubber strap wrenches to use on the long part and a wrench to use on the cone side with the flats? This is what I used with great success and no damage.

No, but it would not work anyway. I used a wrench on the flats and that is what is getting nicked up. The strap wrench would slip under the amount of pressure it would take to free this thing up. The pliers are not slipping it is the flats actually beginning to round over from the torque. There is just something wrong with it. It is not just tight it is seized or cross threaded.

thanks for the suggestion though.
