Start shaft

I picked one up at Toledo. I loved my original design, but the small one way bearing would slip occassionally. The new one is MUCH more robuts.

My new one doesn't run nearly as tru as the old one. I could hit the button on the starter at 14.4 volts and let it spool up with no wobble/vibration. It was actually the smoothest starter I have ever witnessed personally. My new one vibrates dangerously if you don't support the tip with my fingers while spinning.

I also noticed that there is about 1/2 inch of in and out play on the shaft removable shaft. The shaft slides out of the adaptor when vertical, but pushes back into the adaptor when I push the starter down into the starter cup on the heli. When I try to remove it, there is about 1/2 inch of play. I can actually hear the steel ball in the adaptor rolling back and forth. My old one would clamp down nice and solid when I screwed the removable cone into the adaptor.

I have the end screwed on as tight as it will go, even though the rubber o-ring is not seated against the adaptor body.

Note

I should mention that when I remove the 6mm shaft and only have the adaptor installed on the starter, it runs super smooth. It is only when the long shaft and cone are installed that the system wobbles terribly. This is straight out of the package last night, too.

I have not even started a heli with it yet.

I picked one up as well. Its a little longer than I would prefer but I like the detachable end, thrust bearing, and custom hex end. The 12mm one way rocks.
I liked the guarantee that came with it Thats what sold me!!

Does your 6mm shaft have end play? Can you hear the steel ball rattle around?

I don't remember it being an issue. I hear the ball if the shaft is not installed.
Let me check it tonight and I will let you know.

Sunshine & 60 degrees this weekend. It will get a good test!

Tyler,
My shaft has the same amount of play as yours when installed.

Just to clarify

We are not referring to the shaft of the actual starter moving in and out, but rather the end play of the removable 6mm shaft that actually gets inserted into the helicopter, correct?

How does this compare to the K&S?

K&S

I would take this unit over the K&S any day! I sold a k&s after buying this one. Now the Vario unit, that is another story, I regret letting my vario go, but I needed a longer starter shaft and I happen to have the short version of the vario because I didn't know there was a choice.

How would you compare this to the Robbe? I've had mine for two years and the only thing I don't like about it is that the wand does not pop off for transport.

And that is why I would take the Sullivan wand over the Robbe wand.
Both work very well.

Wand

I now have about three gallons of use on my Sullivan wand and love it. I am using this for a YS 50 and a couple of OS 91sz's.
