Safety - RC Helis are not toys > Ever been chased by your Heli?

I am getting back into Heli's after a long fear of being chased by my own. Our local air field has a nice grass patch for helis to play over away from the air planes. My Heli was and I do mean was, a Kyosho Electric. It was my first time practicing hovering without safety gear on. I started hovering a couple of times, The third time it started to drift, so I decided to land it. It thought different next thing I'm yelling runaway , as people are now being chased by my heli including me. The intire time I am praying for the fail safe to kick in. Then it kicked in the heli hit the ground, cool I thought. I approached carefully, figuring it was over. Just with in arms reach it kicked over enough to get air born, and get me in my right leg. Granted it being electric no serious damage to me. A small scar, and some good bruising. heli was toast though

I learned two things that day
1) Fail safe only works when you lose complete radio signal, at least on mine.
2) Even though you have radio clip, some one on your ch might carelessly check his airplane for trim

Welcome back to the hobby and welcome to runryder.. I would say most of here TRY not to get chased..... But I notice myself getting screwy when the helicopter is almost directly overhead and I loose my visual ground cues... So I just dont fly directly above myself.. That would be bad practice anyhow.....

This was not funny at the time.

We were at a funfly and a friend bolted his camera gear to my reliable Robbe Gasser. Over the two days I flew it I think 4 times whilst he took pics all went well.

On the final afternoon we had a line up of pilots with their machines (as you do) Then we decided to to a shot with the camera tiliting straight down above - this is where Murphy's law kicks in.

The heli started to bog and loose power, immediatley people grabbed their helis and started to run, unfortunatley they all ran in all directions whilst I tried to spiral the heli to the ground trying to dodge people running.

I got the heli down without damage and we all had a laugh but it could have been different.

When I was first learning to fly I was doing some figure 8's high in the sky and I got to a point I did not know what to do. It tilted to the left and when I put input I made the wrong input and it went more to the left. By the time I got it straight it was come straight at me. The only thing I could think of is duck. It went over my head about 5 feet and hit the ground behind me. Talking about a close one it was. But you have to get back up and get the heli flying again.

I learned from that one that you need to make sure before you try something new to always have an out or know what you are going to do if it does not work for you.

Been there.

Earlier this year i had brought a Len Mount large scale UH-1C "Huey" that i just had to have. first time ever owning anything over a 60 size and anything that was r/c powered buy a real jet turbine engine. Haveing joined the u.s Navy in march of 65 flying at that time the SH-3's Sea King or other variants an getting into r/c helis sometime in the late 70's i always wanted a turbine powered one. It just stood out in the back of my mind about how real they would look an sound in the air. Well sometime in the mid 80's i saw one at a show in nevada..los vegas i think. Any's that was it, had to have one..only one problem, money. And a lot of it! Well i will get one when i retire i told my self. Well that happended in '95 still had a small fleet of 30 an 60 powered machines. Well the dream came true this year. his huey weighed 33 pounds fully loaded and was 82 inches long! And it looked good! To good to fly almost. I had flew it at the park by myself even though younger pilots told me i was senile for flying a r/c turbine copter bymyself. I made a few passes over the field and i mean Nap Of the Earth flights! The mains were only inches above the ground and under 100% power! My hands were trembling about how real it looked even thought it was a model. It brought back plenty of memories for me both good an bad. I had just brought it to a hover about four feet off the ground. To my surprise a whole lot of people had came over to watch and i mean 20 plus. One spectator had actully came over and started talking about how real it looked and from a distance it looked like the real deal. He even said it was the first one he had seen in 30 years. Well it was hot that day mid august 100 something plus. Well i still dont know what i did but i moved my arms up for ventilation in the undrerarm area. Upon bringing them down my kneck strap became tangled up in the transmitter and pulled the cyclic forward and the collective forward at the same time. That big scale huey nosed forward and shot off like a rocket! Picking up speed as the nose dropped even futher. Looking at it my mind went back to when i was shot down in a Sea Hawk after dropping some special forces guys off. I crashed in on top of a mountain. We all walked away, the three off us with only brusies and scars but the ship was lost. Thinking that was it for us, up out of the valley came the most remarkable sight and sound a Army Huey that had heard our may day and was comeing to get us! I snapped back to the present with one thought, This one is going to kill me! Not rescue me. I Pushes the guy down and i fell backwards about the time the rotor blades under 100% power as the case with turbine r/c whacked the antenna off my transmitter those big blades were within inches of my nose! I jumped up as people started running as it was heading for them at probaly over 40mph now and pulled the cyclic all the way back while giving it full tail spin. Standing almost stright up the big huey settled into a hover and i landed it and hit the engine kill switch and whiped the sweat off my brow. After nearly two decades of r/c flight nothing like this had ever happended to me not even close. But that was it for me and kneck straps!

years ago when doing my 1st loop did it to low - to close- and in front of me. basicly did a figure nine. on the down side of the loop i was like #$% its going to go straight into the ground . actual it was coming straiht down to the ground right at me . realizing it at the very last second literally. dove to the ground on my chest. scared 3$%$#%. now i hear the heli engine running. sounds like right behind my head laying on my chest looking over the thing is hovering right above me. the skids about 6 inches away from my head . landed it . my girl friend saw the hole thing. she said she thought i was going to die. it was going straight at you and so on

Hey, ground effect, sounds like a beautiful turbo machine! Do you have any pictures before you total it or kill somebody? I would really love to see your turbine. Thx

Years back I learned to fly FF but could not hold nose in. I was told to do figure 8 way up high and slowly practice nose in. My first attemp almost was a disaster when the heli was up high approaching nose in and I froze not knowing what control to use. The heli started to nose dive toward me and I tried to run but my feet felt like they were nailed to the ground. Luckily, I held on to forward cyclic and I saw the whole span of the 30 size blades screaming about 5 feet in front of me then the heli hit the ground inverted.
I kneeled down and went face down to the ground to be thankful I was not hit. Learned nose in from the ground up instead.
