This is tank number three. I felt comfortable enough to remove the training gear for this flight.

The Helo fly's even better with the gear off. Thanks Vetrider for settting it up and taking me under your wing.

Congratulations.......... Like other famous sayings "look ma no hands and " watch this". You really need to have a better place to fly. it only takes a second for the machine to take out a car a house or a person.

A little spooked...

I'm still a little affraid of taking mine off. The only time I tried it, my Nexus started torqing hard to the right as I approached take-off. This scared me enough to idle it down and put the training gear back on. Is this normal? It amazed me just how much stability you lose by taking them off. I guess I should just go for it, what do you guy's think?

Stability

I actually think the helo is a lot easier to fly without the gear. Just do not try to fly in the grass like I did.

After reading the previous post, I took my 30 to the field in back of my house. I learned very quickly that I do not have the skills to fly from a grass field. I tiped the helo over and struck the blade.

What was the problem with the grass field - was the grass long ??

I fly from grass fields and only have a problem when the grass is long - normally we keep the grass to about 1 inch or so. I was taught many years ago that when flying from grass to always make your lift off positive. I spool my blades up to just below hover (lift off rpm), making sure to keep the head speed below that needed for the heli to get light on the skids, and then I push the throttle open in one movement to just above hover position to almost punch the heli into the air.

Again with landing you have to be positive. In grass the skids will not slide very well so if you do not come down straight you can tip over if you are not careful.

Congrats! It took me 11 tanks of fuel before I had the confidence to take off the gear.

Grass

The grass was pretty high.

That would explain it !! The skids can get caught in long grass and that is the end of it.

Greet Feeling

It is hard to describe the feeling you get from flying helo's. It was so overwhelming the first time I hovered, that I was not able to drive home. My wife had to drive us back from the field

Yup it feels like that alrigth. If you think that's the end of it wait until you do your first piro flip or piro loop or some really cool hot dog maneuver. Just make sure you have a designated driver. I know the day I can do a knife edge snake on the deck a-laTodd Bennett I'll need a couple of days of detox.
