e-Electric Motors & Controllers > Help with MS brushless setup!

Hello, Fist thanks for all the replies on the topic 3D Hornet.

Well I got myself a MS brushless setup for my CP Hornet. I'm using a 8 cell nimh pack, with a 13 tooth pinoin. I just tried it out and the heli hardly got above a 1 inch hover???? I setup the speed control in linear mode. I know something is definately not right. This is my first brushless setup so........ well I don't know what to say. I have many other electric brushed aircraft. I know my pitch range is O.K. Also the speed control does not drive the motor until my throttle stick is just above 20%, then it will accelerating until about 55% stick then it stops accelerating. I'm abit disappionted after spending $200 USD. There has to be something thats not right.

So, anyone have a clue?

Dude you should have got a hacker and a pheonix 10. Try dropping the gear ratio down with a 10 or 11 tooth pinion on the motor. If at all possible it's nice to have the govenor mode. Set it to at least 2000 RPMs and adjust your pitch curves to the point that the motor just starts to bog from the load then back it off just a bit. If you cant' use Govenor mode you have alot of tinkering in store to get the curves right.

Take care,
Joe

Well I tried a 10 tooth pinion and it did not help. I ran the heli for about four minutes and the electrics did not even get warm???? Do you think I could have a falty ESC? My stock speed 300 setup has about 50% more power than the brushless. Its like putting a 32 in a big scale gasser!

Are you absolutely sure that you are getting a full charge on your batteries? Did you slow charge the batteries overnight on the first charge? Which charger are you using? What are your ATV settings on the throttle channel? What are your throttle curve settings? Do you have a little backlash on all the gears? What is your head speed? How much does your hornet weigh? I've heard that this setup comes with a 17 tooth pinion, have you tried it? I'm sorry to ask so many questions but I have a Hacker and don't have any experience with the MS brushless setup.

Take care,
Joe

Well.....
Its the same pack I used with my 300 setup. It is a 8 cell 650 nimh pack. I cycled it when I was changing to brushless and it was rated at 641mah. I have not changed my atvs they are at 100%. My throttle curve for the 300 was 0% 55% 88% 100% 100%... for the brushless it needs to be at 0% 88% 100% 100% 100%..... with that I can barely get off the ground??? My gear mesh is good and it weighs 11 ounces. I just tried the 17 tooth pinion and I got enough and I say just enough head speed to hover about 2 inches. Now this ESC has a mind of its own. What will happen is I will try to hover but there is no head speed. I give it full throttle and then back to mid stick wich will result in the motor running a bit faster. It will some times surge a little. I'm advancing the trottle then suddenly the motor rpm will spike then drop then spike. I could throw a prop directly on the motor to get a better idea of what type of rpm and transition I get. I might find some one localy with a differnt ESC to try out.

I have heard of people having problems with lag time in govenor mode with this ESC but haven't heard anything of the surges you explained. I did have the a similar surging problem with my Hornet trying to use one of the coiled tube type antennas that was fixed by removing the coil and soldering on the stck wire back on. Try jacking the ATV on your high throttle side up to 110% or even 120% I use 115% on the top side with my Hacker/Schulze combo. IF the motor doesn't seem to bog when you hit the throttle you might even add some more pitch. The pitch paper pitch gage included with the kit is best used to scribble notes on and thrown away when the notes are no longer needed. I think trying another ESC is a good idea if you can. If it turns out that is the problem I'd see about getting a refund for the controller rather than a replacement if at all possible and buying a pheonix 10. I've only heard of unsatisfied consumers using the MS offering. I want to get rid of my Schulze 20HE if you're interested and would take $50.00 for it. Which I would turn around and get a Pheonix 10 with it simply because of the weight savings and the unwillingness of the kokam batteries to play with my present load demands. To continue trouble shooting your problem I recommend that we take this to the Hornet forum www.hornet-heli.com where there are others with alot more experience than I to give more options.

Take care,
Joe
