ESC settings.

Any special settings on the tail ESC? I'm using the G90 on mine and have it on digital mode. Made a big difference. I cant get the castle creations USB software to run on my laptop so I cant change my settings from the first time I set them. I think I have 35% brake and 85% throttle.

Then Hodakaguy gave me a GWS DD adaptor set that had some longer 1.6mm motor mount screws that worked good - Kinda expensive way to acquire a couple small screws though - It's ridiculous they don't supply proper mounting screws with these motors
I couldn't agree more. I bought two sets of the GWS EDP-50XC Direct drive motor and prop, and have not been able to find the M1.6 mounting screws anywhere. Apparently, BPHobbies has a set of IPS motor mounting screws but they're out of stock. I another another complete DD set which I think has the screws from another source, but they were back-ordered. Hmm, maybe epoxy glue will work :S

Anyone deal with CastleCreations technical support? I checked out my ESC problem on their web site. Surprisingly, the issue was listed with the recommendation to contact technical support. I sent them an E-mail. I also called today and left a voice mail. No response in either regard.

Any experiences, good or bad with CastleCreations?

CC tech support

I talked to them a few times. let a message and got called back. Good support. Unfortunately for me my problem (according to them) was a .net issue and their software wont run for me. But good support anyway.

OK, I'm frustrated, tired, and not getting anywhere. So what's the best thing to do? Pose the problem to the RR experts!

I'm working with the direct drive tail setup as recommended in the beginning of this thread. I purchased a replacement Thunderbird ESC while I'm waiting for the warranty replacement from Castle Creations. I set up the tail this evening and started working with the trim and subtrim. Started out OK, but then went to an uncommanded full right rudder. Talk about a fast piro! It threw a blade off the tail prop before I could get it shut down. I put on my one replcement prop and tried again. This started out OK, but once again went to an uncommanded full right rudder. Wicked fast piro to the right, then threw the entire prop, followed by an equally fast piro to the left. I have NO idea as to how I managed to get the heli back to the floor without breaking anything. After a half hour of searching, I still can't find the thrown prop.

So what is happening? Possibly gyro problems? I'm using the small 6-gram TeleBee HH gyro. This small unit has been a consistent performer.

Also I'm interested in your rudder trims. I started by adjusting the rudder subtrim such that there is no tail rotor input while at "0" main throttle. Do I need to mix throttle and rudder input in the transmitter (Spektrum DX6) such as presented by a 3 in 1 unit.

No more experimenting this evening. I'm tired and out of props. And awaiting your comments!

Sorry - I've been on vacation for a week -

I first tried a G90 gyro but I didn't go any further than a bench test with it because I didn't like the behavior I was seeing - My GY401 looked a little better in bench tests and great in flight tests - Later I tried my G90 and it did work better than I expected (not near as well as my gy401 though)

A question on radio setup. Do I need to mix throttle (master) with rudder (slave) such that I get full left rudder input, i.e., "0" power to the tail rotor with throttle all the way down?

The radio setup is a DX6 system receiver, gyro plugged into channel 4, gyro HH to channel 5, and the CC ThunderBird ESC into the gyro (TeleBee 6g)

If I do not use mixing, then the tail ESC immediately commands half power on startup. This is with trim/subtrim to "0". If I use trim/subtrim such that the tail does not come on, as I throttle up the main rotor I initially get a piro to the left, but then the tail kicks in with full right and I snap into a "killer" high-speed piro to the right.

This is so frustrating. I've sorted through my HDX300 and ended up with a fine flying little heli. And everyone knows what a bear that machine is to sort through. So many people are having good results with the brushless direct drive tail. But I'm sure not!

I have to be missing something so simple and obvious that I'm blind to it. Can anyone help an old man out?

I only assigned a rudder-to-rudder mix to the throttle-hold switch to initiate the tail ESC after my GY401 initiates and to prevent the HH gyro from running the tail motor when I don't want it to

Worked on the DD tail setup again this evening. The mixing of rudder with throttle seemed to help, but the tail didn't want to hold whether switched between rate and HH mode or when the channel 5 lead is disconnected. This forces the TeleBee 6g into HH only. Not too bad until a right rudder command is made. It then goes into a full right command and just piros the little monster like crazy.

So I'm going to take the TeleBee off and put in one of my Futaba 401 gyros. Almost hate to do it. Next to the little TeleBee gyro, the Futaba 401 is HUGE! I'll get it figured out. If I can tame my HDX300, then I can tame about anything.

gmcullen, It sounds like you need to reverse your gyro. Have you tried that?

That happens when the Gyro is mounted upside down. Clock it 180 degrees and check it out. Mine did the same thing when I first got it

Any landing you can walk away from is a good one!

Inverting a gyro is the same as reversing it - A gyro rotates the opposite direction when inverted which changes the direction of output the same as reversing it - You can invert a gyro and set it to REV and it will operate the same as it did upright and set to NORM.

I'm going to start a thread that covers my success (at last!) with the DD tail. Thanks to all for your help!

I had a great day of flying today - I wish I owned a video camera to share some of these fun flights - I now have 24 flights (3.5hrs) on this brushless tail motor -

Here's some video from a chilly early morning out on the beach last week - I was cold and rusty so I kept some altitude and didn't get very aggressive - I'll try to get some better video sometime soon - But here's this for now -

Starts with some long hard punch outs and ends with some continuous flips -

Micro-Mania, is that a g90 on your cp, it looks like it is mounted face up. I ask this because the directions say it must be mounted face toward the tail. How flexible is the mounting of this thing.

Good flying by the way. Looks like it was a bit windy, but you had good control, its fun to see how well some people can handle this little heli.

I originally was going to go with the "Gino DD" tail, now I will have the Feigao DD tail. Just waiting for the parts to arrive!
