I have heard of several tricks to learning nose-in hovering and I have tried a couple of them, but the method that has helped me the most is to move the stick in the direction of the side of the rotor disk that you want to raise. For the rudder move the stick in the direction that the nose is pointing. I've been trying this on my simulator and it has helped me a lot.

Nose in

Hi,

You have the basic idea of how nose in works. Keep trying it on the sim until it gets to be second nature then take your bird up a few mistakes high and then try it. Learning nose in will really help you when you get to more advanced flying.

Hello CWaldrip,

MRGrantSr is leading you down the right path. Some start nose in by putting the training wheels back on. Thus practicing from the ground up.

Others that are flying eights or circuits can start learning nose-in in the air.

The more time spent practicing, the more natural it becomes and the less conscious you become of moving the sticks. You just move them without really thinking about the sticks, but what you want the heli to do. It's known as being relaxed and comfortable.

Orientation is key to developing flying skills. Knowing what attitude your heli is flying in and how to bailout of a botched maneuver gives a feeling of security that lets you try new maneuvers.

The sim is an invaluable tool for learning and any new heli pilot should have one IMHO. Even most old crusty heli pilots have one.

Tail Control Nose In

Just remember that the rudder control moves the part of the heli that is farthest from you when the heli is upright. That means that when you are tail in the rudder controls the nose (the point farthest from you), and when you are nose in the rudder controls the tail (the point farthest from you). That is how I learned and it works well for me.

There is a good explanation of this on Heliproz's website. go to their main site and select the "Flying RC Helicopters" link. Read it all, but near the bottom there ia a section on tail control.

Keep practing on the SIM and once you learn it there you should be ok.

It will be different in real life. The bird and nerves always act a little different. Nose in is the best thing to learn and learn early. It will help you confidence and overall ability.
