Is it just me, but when im out with family or non-heli friends, at a party and chatting about ,life things,golf , fishing and other peoples intrests ect , well i show an intrestand ask about whats new, ect, ect ........most explane and go on and i dont mind at all. THEN they ask what do you do for a hobbie, or if they know me `been flying today' ..I say yup had a great fly or whatever......then that it ....no more talk about helies......I AM A HELI MUPPET ....most people just dont understand , not that its important to me , but my conversational input goes down like a lead balloon

Is it just me

I guess they can't relate to how "great a time" you had
fellow flyer's know it though

and It's actually a bit selfish of some people in general who ask how you are doing,
when in actuality what they really want is to tell you about
how they are doing.

HAHAHA we all get that. Most none heli peopl do not know or understand what a rc heli can do or care. They think they are toys and we should grow up and take up golf or some lame as sport like that.

After they know how much they cost, how much time goes into flying, and that it is NOT a toy they show a little more intrest. Then you get the regular 5 Questions:

How much does it cost?
how high will it go?
how fast will it go?
is it hard to fly?
can I try it?

I Gave up trying to include my none heli friends in my hobby, When someone asks me what I do in my spare time I tell them I go to the local bar and watch the peelers hehehe.

Something curious:
How is the cost of r/c heli addiction compared to other addiction like fishing, photography, plastic models, golf and whatever "toys" that grown up man plays?
I doubt we are the most expensive.....at lease our membership fees at a flying club is less than that of a gold club.

Hey Sluggo, i'm a competition golf player (hcap-2) and a half decent flyer, so don't go there !!!!

It's true that most people just think it's just a toy, especially the ladies!!! I don't think 'I fly toy heli's ' would make a good chat up line ????

I think once they see the size, and mechanics of these things visually, then they sort of change their minds, well aleast, this is what happened when I took my heli into work.

competition golf player (hcap-2 HAHAHA sweet dude. I think it is a great game but to much money with heli's to. Another great hobby but very $$$$ is paint balling. The amount of upgrades in that hobby would blow your mind lol!

Where I work we make parts for them in all kinds of cool colors. There is more upgrades for a paint ball gun then there is for a ergo 30 or rappy.

I hear ya.

It's been getting really bad at work lately to the point that they equate
being a heli pilot to being a Trekkie (Nerd).

It got so bad the other night they started calling the guy I was training "Wesley Crusher"

Same for every hobby, golf, fishing, boating...etc. There are always tons of shiny parts for you to buy!

As for the pickup line "I fly rotary winged remote piloted aircraft during my free time." is better than "I fly toy/model helicopters for fun."

They really dont get it... When ppl come to the house even and they see the Raptor and the X-Cell in my living room, they dont even ask about them!! I have to bring up flying indiscretely and then its a dead issue after about 35 seconds... But then bring up cars and you can sit there and listen for an hour

They just don't know what they are missing....

Still in the closet

I'm sure that i'll receive plenty of bad replies for saying this, but I'm almost ashamed to tell anyone about my addiction with helis. Only close male friends know that i'm into "it". I even hurry into the local hobby store so that no one will see me enter, especially if a female, of my age, is near. Once inside, I tend to look at the other patrons as "Geeks/nerds". I know it's wrong.
